BGS/BVG poppage - some low grade vintage

Thought I'd share my BVG results that just came in today. Several are pickups from Ron Burgundy's Lot on the BST board a while back. Thank again Ron for the nice cards, David.

  • To keep this PSA related, anyone have a good remedy for getting out light scratches on PSA slabs?

Cool cards. But how did BVG give that 1953 mays a 1.5 and then the 1958 stan musial a 2. Cant even see mays.
  • It hard to tell from the scan but, the musial has 2 heavy creases, centering issues. The mays must have earned it's half point from centering.

It's a sports card forum, doesn't have to be PSA related. Nice cards.

How the heck did that Mays get slabbed, let alone a grade higher than 1? Wow.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

    On the mays agian.
But I would think its bad for BVG s rep to even give that grade. Its just saying hey all that we grade think of it as PRo or GAI bc we over grade. That half point was just terible judgment/opinion
    .
Sorry to rant but Im a little peeved with the grading system right now. They kind of jipped me out of 3 grand.(wont explain, personal).

Thanks for the comps, Vlad subs are 8.5 centering and 9.5 everything else. They could have bumped a half grade IMO but, I'll take the 9
  • The Mays qualifies as poor under both PSA & BGS specifications. From what I understand BGS's grading algorithim weights centering pretty high and that would explain the half point.

Give me a PSA 1 over that BVG 1.5 ANY day. Everything else looks pretty decent, but they sure dropped the ball on that Mays....

If you don't mind my asking, why grade those cards at all? Don't get me wrong, I love collector grade cards. I'm just wondering if it's for protection or something other than added value. I just can't imagine the cards gaining much resale value by being graded.

$6 grading fee /card was a great deal for 34 cards, paid low prices on the raws and most are for my personal collection. Should get back a nice ROI on the modern stuff. You never know on graded vintage stuff, their are buyers out there that can made it worhwhile on the low grades.

As a buyer, I am MUCH more likely to bid higher on low graded cards than raw. It is sad but I just figure most raw vintage stuff on eBay is altered/trimmed and bid accordingly.
