<< <i>I can have a free ticket to the World Series if I can get from NY to TX. Any legitimate thoughts? >>
Often times, on last minute travel, you can pickup air/hotel packages cheaper, than you could pickup air only. I was reading the local paper, and it was mentioning that if you wanted to go from Dallas to San Francisco for the series, that airfares were running as low as $500 round trip with stops, or as low as $900 for round trip with no stops, but if you were willing to book a package deal, you could get airfare and 3 nights at a minimal 3 star hotel for $479.00 total trip. A package might be an option you wish to consider.
Also, on a few different occasions, I've purchased round trip vouchers for AirTran (who does service NY to TX) off of ebay for as low as $150.00, and been able to use them instantly as once you buy them, get the seller to send you the code on them for booking and have them overnight you the actual voucher. I've succesfully done that for a couple trips to Chicago as well as Orlando from Dallas.
If you are willing to search hard enough, you should easily be able to find affordable airfare.

Check Expedia, but short notice I am sure will cost a ton almost anywhere.
