Suggestion for a BST "cleared" buyers/sellers list.

As I am the one who was ALMOST had by waltscoins, and my paypal is probably locked forever because of it, I am hoping this might help others in the future.

Ok, I am suggesting this based off of a car forum I am part of. It is also based off of Boom's Swap idea, where everyone is "verified" by each other. On the car forum, it is actually a sticky in the top of the Buy/Sell Thread.

Basicially, it is a way for us to help police each other. The list would be maintained by one person, and people are added and verified by other reputable members on the forum. This is not a "catch all" but to help possibly weed out some of the problems. To be added to the list, you will have to be "verified" by a minimum number of people. If there are any problems, you are immediately removed from the list (obvious things apply here.).

The list will be in the first post, and in alphabetical order, and updated somewhat on a regular basis. Buyers and Sellers can make a quick look to the list instead of trying to pm all kinds of people looking for "approval." It will be a lot of work in the beginning, but not so hard to maintain once its up and running.

What are your thoughts on if we should do this and suggestions if so? I can edit this thread as needed if we choose to go forward. Its not foolproof, and due dilagence is still needed, but it might help. Even if it stops one scam, its worth it IMHO.

I've had very positive transactions with the 132 members without ever requiring a list.

    For me, nope, sorry.
I've been here for 6+ years and am fine with how it works. Could it be better? Maybe. However, I am not a fan of trying to overdo things and create more hurdles/roadblocks.

I've had a number of deals on the BST as a buyer, and a fair number as a seller. I hope my reputation is there already.
To make a list, and hope the timing/integrity of the list is kept up, is to onerous. Also, one better have 100% of all the facts, and be able to back it up, just in case someone claims they should be on it but aren't allowed to.

I also don't think, and I hope this is true, that PCGS wouldn't allow such a list to be posted to their boards.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • I really don't see it as necessary. If you are unfamiliar with the other party - just ask for some board references. It accomplishes the same thing without the bureaucracy.

Don't like the idea at all and don't think we need to take the step. You write that your PayPal account might be locked because of the aborted transaction, would you share how that happens?

I agree, no need for the list. Most of us are active on the boards and like a big family around here. image

I havent used paypal in months, and I found an option that would allow me to either choose that the buyer, or the seller could pay the fees. I thought this was under the personal payment owed. I went through the process, thinking it would ask me at the end who to pay the fee. (I wanted to make sure the purchase was protected.). I immediately realized that I had messed up, but the payment had already been processed. I immediately called paypal and informed them the situation, and requested that the transaction be reversed, and I would resubmit it. In the meantime, while I was on the phone, all this about waltscoins came to light on the forum. I explained this to a fraud representative with paypal, and he informed me the best thing I can do is to go to my bank, and force a stop payment. He informed me that under no circumstance should I run it as a "unauthorized charge" because then I would be on the hook, however I needed to simply do a stop payment. That is what I did... however I beleive once it all processes though, Im going to be the one paypal is looking at. While I dont know this to be a fact, I am simply assuming. The payment was kicked back today, and Im sure I will know something from paypal within the next couple days.

Thank you for the information. I do not use PayPal that much, either, and was hoping I would not make a mistake in funds transfer that would compromise my ability to use the service.

I've never had a problem here. That said, I'm very cautious.
  • Although I have had only 2 transactions here on BST 1 with "Mikes coins" I decided to send my gold coin to him in advance of his payment (he didn't complain about getting the gold before payment) Was it risky on my part? probably yes, but I figured it would jump start my selling reputation on the BST and make future sales from me easier. Mike sent me his check fast! my #2 sale netted me a loss it was a half ounce PCGS 70 PR plat. PCGS listed price $1500. I received under $400. and I had to pay shipping! (My fault for not having a reserve but the buyer was happy! he asked if I had any more too but didnt want me to use his name in this post for some reason) Would I send a gold coin or any coin again in advance of payment probably not. But the transaction went great with Mike. Now at least I have a reference for any future sales from me. I have lots of 90% silvers and some platinum I intend to sell on the BST (when the price is right for me to do so).

I've developed my own list, and never had an issue buying or selling.
Nearly 50 buying transactions, and 10 selling transactions.
Guess I tend to stay with people that have been around a while and post regularly.
I believe most of the forumites are good people, and say what they mean when it comes to selling or buying.
So far no issues, I feel comfortable here.

EDIT: My last 6 transactions: sold items to VikingDude, bought from dcarr, guitarwes, thebigeng, Tdec1000, ErrorsOnCoins.

I agree. I've never had any problems with any transactions from either here or the Precious Metals or the Sports Card forum.

I have never had anything less than wonderful buying and selling experiences here. I have bought some really nice stuff at competitive prices and got better than expected coins even.

All of these BST threads involve "oh, someone else will manage things" and are getting kind of tiring - if you follow basic reason in your buying tactics you should do fine without any certified dealers or a special list of good guys.

Here's a tip - if someone has 2 posts and wants to sell a $500 item DONT BUY

Here's a tip - if someone is selling a $4000 coin for $2000 DONT BUY

Here's a tip - if someone wont use a safe payment method or allow returns DONT BUY

Many behind the scenes work harder for my money than I do. A few of them are even honest about it.

Not a fan of the idea. Never had a problem. Common sense has been a very good guide.

This forum is a pretty tight community, compared to a lot of Internet forums. Screw up here and word gets around, opportunities go away. Bad guys are found and shot quickly.

Something like a 'Circle of Trust'? image

Seriously I don't see a need for it for the various reasons outlined above. I have had dozens of transactions with forum members and never had a problem. Do folks get burned every once in a while? Sure, even by long time forum members who have had a lot of transactions...a couple come to mind. These are folks that for whatever reason decided that their monetary gain was more important than their reputation or they just screwed up and were unwilling or unable to make it right.

That being said, even a list cannot guarantee a problem free transaction...I think some of the suggestions limiting your business to established sellers/buyers who have proved themselves, communicating with them, and making sure your bases are covered (using insurance, etc.) helps a lot.

The bottom line is though is there is always risk in any business transaction and this risk should be calculated into your activities.

Sorry to hear about your paypal account...but at least you were not taken in.
