Homework assignment

For the past two years I have assigned my U.S. History classes a project related to baseball cards. They have to choose a historical figure and turn him/her into a baseball player.

Here are a few that I have graded so far:

Nice. First I started thinking, no way Stonewall would be a short stop. But you do need him in a position he can move around a lot and go after the other guy.

Andrew Jackson would make a great clean up hitter.

John Smith should be a pitcher.

Thanks for the kind words. The top one is Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson (Confederate General) and the bottom one is Andrew "Old Hickory" Jackson (The one responsible for the Trail of Tears). The students had the choice of anyone from Columbus till Andrew Johnson the 17th President.

These look great.

I used to do an assignment in my math classes where kids had to create posters for me to decorate the room. I told them I graded on effort, not actual skill or talent, and got some amazing results. Kids would spend waaaaaay more time on those posters than anything else. I even kept some from year to year they were so good.

Thanks again everyone, I'm going to post some more when I get around to it. I think next year, I am going to make the kids create a card that is based on an actual year. (i.e. 1956 Topps) If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
