What is the deal with "manufactured" bat barrel cards?

I mean, a game used bat card or bat barrel card is still a fairly neat idea, though the novelty of it is wearing off. But what the heck is the big deal about a piece of wood on a card that has a players name and team. That piece of wood has no historical significance at all. What a joke.
