Latest Grades and Nice too

Grades popped from cards submitted at the end of August. These were very nice cards and about a dozen of them were purchased at this year's National Convention, including all the 1956's and most of the 1969's except the Bob Gibson that was from my collection.

  • Nice... great eye on the raw card purchases. I guess there still are plenty of nice raw cards to be had... especially at the National.

RE: EOT on '65 Ortega and '69 Jones - why the hell would anyone trim these??

I hope I'm not messing up this thread but I have a general question on PSA and trimming - why do they grade some cards as Authentic but send others back to the submitter? Shouldn't they just grade it Authentic? They do not refund the grading fees, I believe. What do you do with the trimmed cards? Even if you sell on eBay identifying it as trimmed, the buyer may turn around and sell it again without identifying as trimmed. It's a dilemma for me as I have received my fair share of trimmed cards returned to me.

Here's a link to a current 1969 Mantle White Letter graded authentic:

Nice grades. It's a shame you had to wait so long to get them. I'm waiting for three subs that were received 9/03. I guess patience is still a virtue.

I think that sending the cards back if probably their policy but if you want it put in a PSA holder saying trimmed you could request it.

Also keep in mind that if you feel that a card(s) have received an "evidence of trimming" grade that in your mind it didn't deserve, you can ask to have the card reviewed. I have done this on several occasions when cards I have owned for many, many years were graded as N1's....and I knew they were not trimmed. It works best if you catch your grades before the cards are mailed back. They can then review them and you don't need to send them back again. I have had several cards receive a high grade upon review and others changed from N1 to N6 (minimum size requirement). That is good because you receive a voucher for your grading fees for N6 grades. Don't count on a lot of changes but you might have some N1's changed. I believe that PSA is overly careful not to encapsulate cards that they feel might be trimmed, and therefore take a conservative stance if they feel there is any chance that trimming has occured. I don't think you can argue against that because no one wants trimmed cards in holders. However, sometimes a closer inspection will show that what looks like evidence of trimming is not actually the case and the card can receive a grade. A request for review at least in my mind helps me understand what to look for as evidence of trimming so I don't spend money sending in cards that are N1 possibilities. There have been several times that prior to sending the cards in I examined them closely and saw no evidence, but when I got them back, I saw what the problem was, especially after it was reviewed. I have contacted Joe Orlando a couple times when I felt my some of my cards received N1's and I disagreed. He has always been willing to have them reviewed and facilitated the process.
