As a Rays fan and season ticket holder from day 1, I hate it that we got knocked out of the playoffs by Texas, but happy to see that Hamilton is embraced by his teamates like this. I wish Hamilton all the best....Wish he was having such success in a Rays uniform, but it is what it is.
You're one of probably a few hundred, Matt. Seriously, WTF is wrong with Rays fans that you have a first place team getting no more than 11K fans/night when they were playing so well. Out here in Marinerville, I can understand, but the Rays were really good this year.
Just curious about that. Every time I saw a Rays highlight during the season (usually a game they won), the stands were EMPTY.

It's Florida people have about 100 better things to do there than to go to a game. I know if I was going to be staying in Florida for the summer the last thing on my mind would be going to a baseball game it would be girls and the beach and girls.

James, thanks very much for your Lothian, Maryland perspective on Tampa Bay Rays baseball attendance.

Dan, Alot of it has to do with the stadium, saying that its terrible isnt a strong enough word. Its a pit, and a terrible place to watch a baseball game. The other, and probably more important factor is the location. They built the dome on the St. Petersburg side of the bay, and the population isnt there to support it on a nightly basis. They put the dome in an area where there is really nothing else to do, so the draw in miserable. Until the ownership can get support to build a new open air stadium on the Tampa side of the bay, near downtown Tampa, it doesnt matter what kind of team they put on the field, the draw will be terrible.
It's really a shame, Andrew Friedman's (Tampa Ray GM) mother-in-law lives 4 or 5 doors down from me here in Davidson NC. We talk baseball all the time when I am out watching my kids play and such. She has told me how frustrating it is on Andrew and the Executive management team at Tampa, to put such an exciting HOME GROWN team together that plays the game the right way, and noone supports the team. The only time there is a decent draw at Tropicana Field is when the Yankees are in town playing the Rays.
We will be letting Carl Crawford (foregone conclusion he is going to NY), Carlos Pena and Rafael Soriano walk this year. That's $27+ million off the books from a $72 million dollar payroll. Tampa is saying they will have to have a payroll this year (2011) of $45-$50 million as they just aren't generating the revenue to support a $70+ million payroll.
To say its tough to be a Rays fan, would be an understatement, even though we have won the AL East 2 of the last 3 years, knowing your developing players that will eventually walk away when they get to expensive to afford, frankly SUCKS! I hope beyond hope that Evan Longoria is the lone exception!
I think it's just Florida baseball teams in general... The Marlins have horrible attendance, and when the Mets come to town, the Mets fans outnumber the Marlins fans.

Don't feel bad here in Baltimore the local fans would rather rob and shot each other than go to a Oriole's game.
