Pawn Stars - Pete Rose Cards

I did a quick search and found nothing on this although I think it has been discussed before. Was watching the marathon Pawn Stars on The History Channel today and a guy brought in 5 Pete Rose Cards (1967 I think). Rick said they were fakes. Did anyone see the episode and how were they fake? The guy said he had had them for years.

<< <i>Been discussed a few times. They are reprints. Glossy backs was a dead giveaway. >>
Thanks for the quick response. Like I said I did a quick search, typed in Pawn Stars and Pete Rose but nothing came up.

He may not have been lying - "high quality" 1963 rookies card, Pete Rose fakes have been around for many years, going back at least 20 years or so when I first heard about them. Where I believe in my opinion he was lying, is that I think it is quite likely he knew they were fakes.
That whole show is set up and lame
<< <i>I always thought it was funny that this guy would have what he supposedly considered to be 5 genuine 1967 Pete Rose cards, and he's never heard of penny sleeves, top loaders or card savers.

there are a lot of shows that are set up and lame.....I enjoy watching Pawn Stars just to laugh once in awhile....I loved the episode when Chumley went out and got the Bob Dylan album personalized to himself...as we all know this puts a hugh dent in value. .have you ever watched Antique Roadshow and American Pickers...two other shows that are put together to just have people tune in again. Everything nowadays seems to be about reality tv and catering to folks thoughts that they could be holding a valuable item....
Pawn stars is entertaining, but I am sure almost all the stuff brought in there is set up...way too much nice old stuff to be visiting a pawn shop...usually it would be watches and jewlery...how boring would that be.
Also, for every item there seems to be an expert brought in...doesn't say much about the pawn guys.
Appraiser: So, your great aunt gave this to you?
Little Old Lady: Yes, supposedly, it's been in the family for centuries. Great, great Uncle Hedgethistle Von Smizzledwarf received it as a gift from the natives around the turn of the last century.
Appraiser: What do you think it might be worth?
Little Old Lady: Our neighbor, Barney, said he thought it might be worth a few hundred bucks because it's old.
Appraiser: Well, it's a one-of-a-kind item. I've never seen anything like it, simply breathtaking. The detail and the artistry are precise and as a period piece this could potentially bring around 800,000 to ONE MILLION DOLLARS at auction.
Little Old Lady. Oh my god! I.......
Appraiser(sweating bullets): Pretty amazing, huh?
Little Old Lady: We're never gonna sell it.
<< <i>Rick said something like they were fake because they were in too good of condition to be real. Not a very sophisticated method

With any TV show, editing comes into play. I've read a few articles about the shop and they said that most of what they do is pawning versus selling and most is jewelry so of course we never see the "boring" stuff. I'm sure they advertise when they are filming as well so that people are more inclined to show up with things during that time. And like someone else said, these shows make people think they are sitting on something valuable themselves and that causes them to bring in the item to sell it and the show keeps getting different people to appear.

If the Little Old Lady had brought her item to the pawn shop instead, the next few lines would go something like this:
Rick: So, how much do you want for it?
Little Old Lady: 800,000.
Rick: DOLLARS?!?!?
Little Old Lady: Yes, dollars.
Rick: I'll give you ten grand for it.
"Really?"
