I need some info on this set, advertised on pages 50-51. Any one know the weight of these medals?

Never heard of them, seems cheap at $8.50 per 35 mm Sterling silver medal?

Best bet might be to find someone with a scale for measuring precious metal weights. I believe that sterling silver is .925 fine, with copper as the other ingredient.

I'm looking for published specs., similar to those in the Franklin Mint catalog, or someone that knows these from past handling. I don't have the option of weighing the pieces I'm interested in.

I would guess, based on the diameter of 35mm and .925 fine, that the silver content should be in the area of 0.6 ounces per medal (unless the medals are unusually thick or thin).

For comparison U.S. silver dollars have a diameter of 38.1mm, are .900 fine, and have silver content of .77+ ounces per coin.

U.S. silver half dollars have a diameter of 30.6mm, are .900 fine, and have a silver content of .36+ ounces per coin.

At $23.21 per ounce, the value of 0.6 ounces of silver (approximately one medal) would be $13.92. So if this estimate is accurate, the set of 16 medals would have approximately 9.6 ounces of silver, worth about $222 (although they would likely fetch less if sold as scrap).

  • The set you referred to isn't listed but this site is the best I've found for metal weight and purity on private mints.
