Value of 1971 Topps Hockey PSA Registry #4 Set

I am somewhat contemplating selling my 1971 Topps Hockey set, currently #4 on the Registry. I am trying to gauge what this set would sell for, honestly. I welcome all opinions and input
Thanks for the assistance

  • I sold my '71 set a few years back for $1500 to a guy in Canada.... It was at 97% complete with a GPA of 7.97..... I see your set is around 8.8 with some nice 10's mixed in... My thinking is around $3000-3500 if the right guys get a sniff of it.... I would definitely sell during the hockey season/winter when more hockey collectors are spending some $...

I remember a couple of years ago a straight 9.00 GPA PSA set sold for 2750 on eBay. It sold in a day or less, and I think it was a good deal for the buyer.

    Hi,
im #3 on the registry. I would think in todays economy you would be looking at around $2800-3500. However with Ebay you just never know. I would put a reserve on it though. Thats a great set you have and good luck if you sell. BTW PM sent.

FWIW...I would not sell for below $3,500...the appealing thing about your set is that you have a number of PSA 10's, POP 1 and you also have a number of cards that can be easily upgraded (Dryden) in terms of availability (cost is another issue, of course). This tends to be a well-liked set although a number of the top All-Time Sets are retired for some reason. I think your set appeals to someone that wants to get a great start and then upgrade accordingly. Of course, it's always tough to find someone with $3,500 to spend on baseball cards. Best of luck. Very nice set. - Kevin M.
  • Thanks for all the input, guys. Like I said, I have had a great time putting this set together, and am on the fence as to whether or not to hold onto it and keep upgrading, or just sell it and move on

  • I had a great time building my set in a couple of years back!! I was 7 when this set came out and I have many fond memories of these cards.... I wish I had kept mine. Don't rush into selling it until you are sure you want to part with it!

I'm still working on the set, I am only at 44% or so done. I wish i had the money so i could buy it.
  • I had the #3 all time finest set with a GPA of 8.95 which is a little better then what you are offering. I sold it when the 1971 's started dropping in price and when the economy was better then what it is today for 4500.00 with NO E-Bay !! I listed it on e-bay but the deal was done without them.
That being said i would think the best you would do is 3000-3200.00 All the pop's have gone up drastically with the exception of a few cards. The #1 set was sold at the right time years back and i believe it sold for around 15,000.00 and the same owner sold the #1 1972 set and that went for around 18,000.00. Boy did the pop's skyrocket sending the sets worth down drastically.
Both PSA 10 Orr's in the 1971 set were bought from the person who has the #1 set for 5,000.00+ each a few years back. Without releasing 1 of these Orr's i don't think it is possible to ever touch the guy with the #1 set.
If you sell i hope you do better then what i would expect.

Sorry Nathaniel but a straight 9.00 set for 1971 Topps has never sold on e-bay period. Especially for 2750.00. Times are tougher and a solid set with a GPA would sell for less in todays economy but i guarantee you would never pick it up for 2750.00. Even in todays economy i wouldn't see this set sell for anything less then 4,000.00 let alone years back when the set was even hotter and people were bidding rediculous just to improve there set.
How many sets do you see with a GPA of 9.0 or higher ?? I see only 1 and that set has not been sold in years. The owner bought that set from Mastro auctions years back and there has always only been the 1 set with a GPA of 9 or higher.
