Hall of Fame: What does it mean to card values of sure things?

So here's what I am getting at: There are guys that barely make the hall of fame (football, baseball, whatever..). I'll take a guy like Rickey Jackson. If you ask 50 people, at least a fair percentage of them will tell you he should not be in. I bought a PSA 9 rookie card of his back last August for a dollar. Yes, a dollar. That card has sold between $26-$55 consistently since he was selected to be in the HOF. So, for guys like him it obviously makes a difference. But what about slam dunk guys? Does the HOF selection affect the value of cards of Tony Gwynn, Cal Ripken Jr, Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice and the like? For example, I don't think anyone here would argue that barring some major steroid revelation, Greg Maddux makes it in on the first ballot with 90%+ of the voters. Will that mean anything? Or, since we already know he's going to be in, does it just stay the same? Is the actual title "HOFer" just a formality?

It will mean next to nothing, that factor is already priced into the cards of sure thing players.
  • The players do tend go up a little, even the sure things. Like Jerry Rice RC's in PSA 8 were going around $30-35, and went up to around $50 after being elected, and looks like they will level off around $40.

As a general rule, most modern HOF RCs tend to slowly decrease in value slowly as population increases, but very slowly. (Or at least this has been the case with pretty much every 80s PSA 9 HOF rc in football).
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

I can see quite a few Football RC HOF cards that might go up in value if certain guys get elected into the HOF that were sort of unexpected. It might be a sharp rise, then a slow decline in values.

Like the Lions TE Charlie Sanders for example. His RC was selling for $20 in PSA 8 pre HOF election. Then it shot up to over $200 for a little while from the HOF RC hype. Now it's seems to have settled into that $50-70 range with the strong possibility of dropping back to $20 down the road.

Same story with Roger Wehrli's RC.

    The 1970's cards aren't scarce.

Rickey Jackson's RC is not scarce. Eventually that will be a $15 PSA 9.

IMHO the only HOF RC's that might retain value are some long over looked players from the 1950's.

  • Stephen Strasburg was put into the Hall of Fame along with many other can't miss prospects. If a running back runs for 100 yards, he's already put into the Hall of Fame according to eBay sold values. Overall it means practically nothing as "prospectors and investors" jack the prices up all around for the young players leaving them to only devalue over time. The only increases you'll see are probably in PSA 10 borderline HOF's and that's as long as the population is reasonably low
  • Maybe a small bump. But keep in mind, that getting into the HOF is one less thing left for card bumps. next up is either OJ-esque or death

Right after the HOF announcement is a good time to sell. It is quite easy to move rookies then, and usually at a small increase in price.

I have an upper deck Ken Griffey JR SGC 98 Gem Mint.Card will not budge from where its at right now.I have thought of selling it as I am mainly into pre 60s stuff with some exceptions however I just do no want to let it go.I considered Ken to be the best player in the game since Willie Mays IMO.What would he have done had he been healthy his last few years?

Speaking of Mays this months issue of SMR has an awesome cover with Mays. One of SMR's best covers IMO.

Percentage wise, has there been a bigger jump recently than Bruce Sutter's '77 Topps rookie? He was always under the radar, even through the rookie card boom of the '80s. He makes the Hall and his cards more or less sky rocketed. They've probably leveled off somewhat but PSA 9s were bringing $100+ after he was selected.

Just imagine what Biggio's induction will do to his 89 Donruss RC. Sky's the limit.

For sure fire HOFers, the prices jump on the hour of revealing the votes of the Baseball Writers and then slowly fall close to the pre-revelation value. Like many on here stated, the rookie cards of sure fire HOFers are already priced accordingly. Its the unexpected HOFers that have the major increases in prices on their rookie cards.

However, players like Don Mattingly are already priced as if in the HOF even though a large number of people still doubt his legitimacy of being voted in one day. I think his card prices will still go up dramatically if he gets inducted. Too many people do not expect him to be voted in any time soon, so I think there is room for his rookie card to grow on.

I the hof announcement does cause a small increase in prices for the surething guys. The hof might be priced into the cards but the extra attention to someone who might have been irrelavant for the last 5 years might drive the price.

Mattingly cards are already overpriced for a guy that had a good, not great career and only 3-4 really good seasons.
