Is it 2 autos per box Mike? How much were the boxes?
  • TNP777TNP777 Posts: 5,710 ✭✭✭
I've heard they can be had for very little, Nick - something like $38 each

Mike, if you're not doing the set, I think there are 9 Dodgers in the set. I can use all of 'em.

    box 3

I'm doing the set but I should have plenty of extras Geordie.

$38 a box? Damn did I over pay. I've been getting raped over there lately. Not sure what the guy's deal is. After spending thousands and thousands over there the last few years, I think I'm probably done with him now. These were $66 a box.

He wanted $190 for Triple Threads and I got them for $165 a few miles away. He wanted $83 for Topps Football and I got them for $55 a few miles down the road. Not sure why I bothered getting the chrome there. Oh well

Yeah Nick 2 autos per box

Mike, have you been paying attention to the 'brentnbecca' thread over on FCB? Apparently Topps quadrupled production without letting the prebuy folks know about it. Some pretty unhappy big-time rippers out there
  • zep33zep33 Posts: 6,897 ✭✭✭
no, haven't been following that thread at all. that sucks

Unhappy here too, I bought a case at $675 can be had for $550 or less now.

2 friends in for 4 of the boxes so I will be opening 8 boxes. They will arrive tomorrow.

Looks like blowout is selling boxes for $56.99. I don't feel so bad now.

Also Ebay sales in the last day range from 45 to 68 a box. with a few multiple box lots going a bit cheaper.

Did they do the same thing for Chrome Football?

I'm thinking I got really lucky. Bought two boxes on Tuesday for more than I wanted. Got Heyward, Nova and Stanton autos. Seeing some of the autos, not bad at all. That being said, all the autos are weak and slightly smudged. Bad QC on Topps part!

The last issue is the cards are curling like CRAZY.

I just finished one of my boxes.

I really like the Heritage insert (06/61).

What is up with the Heyward refractor???

They look like print marks (like c**p).

The only card that looks like that: it figures.

Oh well, on to box # 2

I ripped a 12 box case yesterday... overall, pretty disappointed. A couple of my observations...

I pulled a Jason Heyward rc auto the very first box I opened, it was pretty much downhill from there.

One box I opened (Box #7 in my break) was all jacked up. One pack had 5 cards and 3 packs only contained three cards. The box contained only two-thirds the amount of inserts as the other boxes... and only contained one autograph (Nova). I will be complaining to Topps as much as possible to get this resolved.

I pulled a Brennan Boesch refractor autograph... nice card, nice on-card autograph. A couple boxes later, I pulled the base Brennan Boesch autograph... and it's a redemption! Why on earth is the refractor in packs, but the base card is a redemption???

As a Cardinals fan, I did pull an Allen Craig blue refractor autograph... so that was cool, but nothing too valuable.

I did pull one gold refractor rookie autograph, Texieria from Seattle.

I plan to sort through the cards tonight to put together sets. From pulling the cards I'll consider having grading... Pujols, Heyward & Strasburg... it seems like I got roughly 4-5 of each card. I'm sure that won't be the case when all is said and done... hopefully I have enough to put together 3-4 sets.

How did they miss putting Buster Posey in the set???

Okay, that's enough for observations... I'll post some picks later tonight.

If any of you other chrome-busters out there are looking to put together any of the insert sets (IE. Refractors, T206, Chicle, Heritage, etc)... I am not an insert guy and will/would be looking to move these cards. I'll post a list tonight as well when I toss up some pics.

    Cheers & Happy Ripping

Topps has some sort of wraper redemption program where you can get some cards from a special set, and Posey's in that set.

I haven't heard that they have jacked with Football yet. The reason baseball got screwed was during the Strasburgh hype they announced he would be in Topps Chrome. The pre-orders went through the roof and Topps filled the orders.

The reason they doubled the auto checklist (and thus delaying the launch) was so that the pack odds didn't change for autos (but the odds of getting good ones sure did).

I would have preferred personally them to go to one auto per pack but make them all better autos and create another tier of colored refractors for autos and bases in Hobby to get more value.

Box 6 became quite an interesting turn of events. Let's see if I can replay this accurately:

shortly after ripping box 6 (another one with 2 autos in a pack with one being a USA auto) , I took the last box hits off the scanner and laid the hits from box 6 down. My scanner is an all in 1 printer / scanner. I had put the pile of cards at the front of the printer here:

    image

while placing box 6 hits on the printer, my cat Bumper jumped up on the table the scanner was on and proceeded to step on the copy button. As soon as she stepped on it, a piece of paper was sucked in to the printer along with all 6 cards that were laying in front of it. I didn't realize at first that the cards were gone either. The printer became jammed and while trying to yank the piece of paper that was half way lodged in, it popped into my head that the cards were gone. The piece of paper came free and 2 of the cards came flying out with it. The blue ref was creased badly. The autos were still stuck inside:

    image

I was a little upset at this point and slammed my fist down on the top of the scanner. I also completely forgot that the scanner was made of glass. I didn't hear it smash and didn't even notice all the glass sloshing around with the 9 cards still in it while I unhooked it and brought it to my desk to try and figure out how to get those cards out of it. I assumed that the sounds was the printer cartridge sliding back and forth. I was able to get all 4 cards out at the same time by grabbing the Werth Heritage card with a pair of needle nose pliers. Got lucky as the Werth was jammed so tight to the 3 autos that they came out undamaged.

I was then happy and plugged the printer back in , lifted the cover to straighten out the cards that I was sure had gotten jumbled by moving the scanner around. That's when I found out what that noise was the inside of the printer. I quickly grabbed all the cards out of piles of broken glass. Sorry I wasn't thinking of taking a pic at this point. All 9 cards were covered in glass dust and tiny specs of glass. Spent about 10 minutes cleaning them all up and they all survived intact. Only cards damaged through this ordeal were the blue refractor and the Werth Heritage refractor. Hope you enjoyed my story as I sure the hell didn't image

and here are the hits from box 6:

sure wish I had a scanner

I have declared my baseball card/computer room a "NO CAT ZONE" for that very reason. Cats have the amazing ability to get into the exact things you dont want them to get into at the worst possible time.

How close did you come to a base set, Mike?
  • Thanks for sharing your rip and the scanner story. +1 on the 1/1 printing plate only because I didnt see it mentioned.

need 15 cards. the last box had no cards I needed for the set and the 4th box only had 2. That kind of killed my chances of completion.

I will, which Tony Gonzalez do you need? The future HOF TE or the injury prone Ohio State WR?

Got the tracking confirmation today, looks like I will be busting packs this weekend. Can't wait, this is the first case I've opened since 2005 Exquisite and Ultimate Collection.

Looks like Topps did the same thing with Chrome football. The street price is $100 less than the pre-order.

This is the last time I do a pre-order.

I also see that a lot of the key rare rookie cards are already on ebay. That means I will have all of the offensive linemen rookies in my case.
