  • The weighting is simple,

    Here is an example.
    An 1881S is weighted 1
    An 1893S is weighted 10

They simply multiply the grade of the coin by the weight and then the set ranking is set. So an AU55 1893S is actually worth 550 "points" where as a MS65 1881S is worth 65 "points".

Did I get that right? Plus if what Larry says is right, a PL and DMPL coin will get a bonus point or two. Heck if I ever get all my 1878 coins graded I might just move up a few spots.

  • Heck, its all confusing. My State quarter set is rated higher than 3 other sets and simply because I have some of the 1999 coins in it.

I am curious how my Morgan set will be affected when the weighting is all said and done.

  • Color me stupid but I have serious problems understanding how an 84s Morgan in Au 50 is worth so much more (10X) than a 80s in 67. I seriously believe that the 80S will be more difficult to find (although a common date) and more expensive. I just added up the published weights on my set and I could possibly throw them away and not hurt my ranking. Oh my head hurts.

What will kill a thread faster than a reply from Ritchie?

  • Larry,

Do you know if PL/DMPL will be a separate set? From a previous "Registry News" note, it looked like it would be separate. They referred to it as "Prooflike Morgan Dollars CS".
