Moving Day on the IKE registry set

Greg relinqueshed his # 2 postion!!!

Thanks Greg!!!

I'll gladly take over the #2 position myself.

Watch out for my back up set!!! It'll be the next to move.

Dennis, you'll be tough to catch, as everything from here on out is pop 2 or less, and we know where one of each of them are. It's all about finding 7 coins graded MS67 OR making another one!

  • Looks like Greg downgraded his 76-D Type 2 to a MS-66. Bet he found another that he like better.

Just so everyone knows, I sold two of my finest graded IKEs, the 71P in MS66 and the 76D Type 2 in MS67. Both were beautiful white lusterous coins. I'll leave it up to the new owners as to whether to reveal their identity, prices, or pictures. For, the curious, I thought I would explain my reasoning for selling these pieces. Comments are of course always welcome.

I needed to assess whether it would be reasonable to achieve the top ranked set. Only a handful of pieces remained which could upgrade my set, and none appeared to be for sale anytime soon. So, I thought I would take a little money off the table and give two other major IKE collectors the shot at the top. Watch out Dennisimage.

Far from giving up IKE collecting, I decided to hold on to my certerpiece irreplaceable coins which include the two highest graded Peac*ocks (74D and 74S), the 72P Type 2 in MS66, the beautifully toned 73D in MS67, and the low pop 76P Type 2 in MS67. If, in the future, I am able to acquire one or two of the pieces I need, I believe I might be able to eventually replace either of the two I just sold (albeit certainly at higher prices).

I also decided to hold on to those pieces valued under $1,000 whether finest graded or not. The only other piece I am still undecided about is my 76P Type 1 in MS66. With a pop of over 15, it also seems like I could find another in the future if needed, at some price. But, I probably need to get over the shock of the two sales I already made.

So, that's what I'm thinking. Congratulations to the two fine collectors who bought my pieces. You got some great coins, treat them well! Good luck in shooting for the top spot. And, Segoya, don't spend too much time looking ahead that you forget to look over your shoulder.

    Cheers

    Greg S.

Greg Rest assured I'll be looking both ways. I know that you're not going away. I think your rationale is absolutely correct: upgrading at our level will be very very difficult.

I have a 76-D Type I that is absolutely mark free. I think I've tried it 5-6 times for a 67. The problem (and it's really not a problem to me) is that the coin has some very light parallel planchet striations that come on IKES. PCGS just doesn't like them. They are so small and insignificant that I'm surprised they care. The coin is very well struck, super luster and no (I mean no) mag marks.

So I'll try this one more than 5-6 more times until it 67's.

Let's hope mystery guy sells some coins in order to upgrade or we get lucky!

    Segoya:

I had the same problem with my 71D, formerly a 66 and now a 67. It also had the parallel striations. Eventually PCGS saw the light and gave it the grade as it was absolutely perfect. The striations are natural and in my humble opinion quite attractive.

Agree with the striation comments. Some can be unattractive, some not.

As far as prints go, does anyone see them on coins graded by other services???

I'm not 100% convinced, but close, that these prints are "an added bonus" of the PCGS grading process. They almost always seem to be close to the rim, as if an attempt was being made to push them into the clear ring inside the slab.

The hazing, I believe comes from the PVC in the 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 flips, even though they sit in poly bags.

I've been reluctant to get some coins regraded because of this, but they seem to be much better over the last year or so.

Good question. Most every IKE that I have ever submitted over the years has been in my possesion for at least several months before they go in. It allows me time to put a good batch together. I have submitted some coins directly after purchase at shows, but mostly not IKES.

I think the problem has been mostly eliminated. Like your thoughts if you are still getting prints on newly slabbed pieces.
