ebay advice?

Ok I have never had this happen to me on ebay before. I put a max bid on something on ebay and within a couple minutes I was outbid. Not a problem it has sold for more in the past and the auction is not going to end for a few days. All of a sudden I get a notice of a bid retraction. The person that retracted their bid is now the under bidder behind me. They bid on this item 4 times before they got over my max. So a couple of questions. In your opinion dd this person do this to see my max bid? And if they did will ebay let them bid on the auction again after they retracted their bid? Thanks for any help.

Yes. He bid to see your current max bid.

Yes. He can keep playing the game, unless the
seller cancels his current bid AND blocks his future
    bids.

    .........................

You can stand pat, or you can cancel your bid
and allow the cheater to become the high bidder.

Since there are "a few days" left, I prolly would
do nothing if I thought the item would likely go
    higher at the end.

  • Thanks for the comments so far. I don't think this is a scam or shill bidding. I have put bids in with this seller before and nothing has ever happened. This person was bidding on some of the sellers other items also and was the first person to bid.

    Storm,

ebay lets people keep on putting bids in after they retracted bids? So lets say I put a max bid of 75 dollars and this person went over that and then retracted; they could bid again and push my bid over 75 again. It doesn't make sense to me. I would think that once a person retracts a bid and lowers the amount they would be out of the auction and not be able to bid again.

If one retracts a bid they are supposed to place another bid.

However that was generally for a mistake. Lets say an item should sell for 500.00

and a person bids 5000.00, they can retract the bid and place the proper one.

Not sure if it was intended for how your scenario went down though.

IMO I'd email the seller and tell him to cancel my bid or block the other guy and cancel his bids.

    Good for you.

  • Hi Steve,

It went just like the way I described. The under bidder kept on bidding 10 dollars at a time and then went over my max by 1 dollar and then retracted his bids. I did have a max set at 75, item sold last week for around 150, and the person that retracted their bid hit the 76 dolllar mark. Now their 50, 60, 70 and 76 dollar bids are gone and I am the high bidder at 42 and they are the under bidder at 41 dollars.

I think that its messed up if ebay will let them bid again on this item. This person had to retract 4 bids. I can understand if they did what you described, put in the wrong dollar amount once, but they had to retract 4 bids.

It dosen't make sense to me.

  • Steve I also think you have a great idea with contacting the seller. Like I said I am almost 100% sure this isn't shill bidding or a scam. I will try to contact the seller in the morning and see what he has to say about this. Have a good night.
