Fish-eyed Pete

I hate it when a PSA 10 Rose has fish eyes glaring at you from several places on the card. I'd love to have a PSA 10 from 1975, but those fish eyes drive me crazy.

Fish heads, Fish heads, rolly polly fish heads...

Sorry, I couldn't get past the left to right centering long enough to find the fish eyes.

  • Thanks for posting this, Dan. Of course, we've seen this stuff before but it bears repeating - I don't understand how PSA can possibly grade that "Gem Mint 10".

In the PSA Grading Standards, the first sentence defining a Gem Mint 10 card is: "A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card."
The PSA Grading Standards go on to state "...an allowance may be made for a slight printing imperfection, if it doesn't impair the overall appeal of the card."

I think a hobbyist with even a small or moderate amount of experience would easily know that the printing imperfection is more than slight, and easily enough to impair the overall appeal of the card.

This is disgusting. Once a card is graded PSA 10, it effectively drops both the value of every card in it's grade (supply/demand), and the value of every other one of those cards in an inferior grade.

How embarrassing. Of course, mistakes happen but it happens too often in my experience. PSA should buy back this card and put it in a holder befitting of it's appropriate grade.

I agree, Keith. Have they ever actually done that?

Hey Dan (I think you were the buyer of my PSA 9 Jordan RC if I remember correctly),

I don't know if PSA has ever bought back misgraded cards. The problem with them doing that would seem to be this: how would PSA sell the card? Of course, PSA selling their own graded cards would present an obvious conflict of interest, in which case they may have to destroy "buyback" cards. I don't know that they would want to get into doing this.

Does anyone else know if PSA has bought back (misgraded) cards?
  • They wouldn't have to destroy or sell them, the misgraded cards would make excellent training tools for graders.

I would imagine a misgraded card would be graded correctly and a voucher given to the holder of the card

I know that PCGS with misgraded coins will offer the coin back to the owner regraded and also make up the monetary difference.

This makes good sense to me.

If you buy a card that is misgraded by PSA you should contact Joe and let him know. If the graders agree with you they will usually put the card in the proper holder and refund you the difference.

In my experience they are not going to refund a card that you think should be a 7 and is in an 8 holder. This Rose card would be an unlikely candidate in my opinion.

On obvious mistakes, where there is a crease or wrinkle in a PSA 8 card or a mark, or centering issues, they would likely compensate you.

This card is much nicer then the 75 Rose psa 10 I saw 4 years ago that had numerous BIG fish eyes all over it. Even the seller had in his description that he had no idea why the card graded a 10 with all the fish eyes on it. To me this card has more centering issues that take away from the eye appeal vs the minor fish eyes. IMNSHO this card is a 9 at best. More like an 8.5 or an 8.

Yep, I like this idea. To me, this is an obvious grading error based on PSA's own guidelines cited by Keith earlier.

I am only able to see the pic now and don't think that is a bad card personally.. the fish eyes are barely noticable
and do not take away.. if they were on the inner portion then maybe.. but looks ok to me

I wasn't going to bother with this but I always liked Pete Rose cards. So here goes...

    * Fish eyes are in the yellow field on the left of the card. Look to the left of the R in Reds and they go down to almost the red field.
    * Print Defects on the R , E, D, and S on Reds. Those black stripe PDs are definitely there. They even cont. past the black under Reds.
    * Centering on the front I guess could be acceptable, but centering on the back is just downright horrible.
    * On the back there is a black PD right on or near the AB in the stats.

Add all those flaws up and it should not be a PSA 10. I would not bother with this card.

    It is over graded imo.

This is what makes it very difficult to spend so much dough on a card because of the grade.

I think that the Ryan PSA9 I sent him to sell for me looks better than the Rose.

, and Craig's Yount is still in a 9 holder.

    Disgusting.

  • I don't mind fish eyes that much. Like rough cuts they don't really bother me. They seem out of place on a 10.
