Babe Ruth Autograph Ball

Hello, I am new to the boards here and am in need of some help. On behalf of my mother(who is buying for my father), I am looking for a Babe Ruth autograph baseball. I have been doing a little research for her and have come across the fact that the autograph needs to be "certified". I have researched several companies (Beckett, PSA, JSA, etc) I am unsure of which company is the best. I have heard that JSA is not to be trusted very well? I dont know if thats true but hopefully someone can help me in this area.

I come from a very wealthy family and Money is not a subject in this purchase. However I do not want to be taken advantage of. What kind of price am I looking at for a ball such as this? Where would one obtain this ball, and whats the best way to determine if its legit?

My father is a very big baseball collector and has many nice pieces. This would just add to his collection. any help to steer me in the right direction is great.

Welcome – great to hear about the prospective purchase!

My thoughts: you could spend anywhere from $2,000 for a barely visible ball signed by Ruth and misc. others, to $15K+ for a nicer single-signed ball.

For that type of purchase, I would shy away from eBay, and stick with a larger auction house. Heritage, REA, Memory Lane are a few which would likely have some balls like that coming up soon.

PSA / DNA or JSA should both be good to go. Jim Spence (of JSA) truly is one of the best in the country, and any negative stories (likely Sal Bando-related) got overblown, so I have no worries with him. I would really end the list right about there for a Ruth ball.

Best of luck with the purchase!

On Ebay a ball authenticated by JSA or PSA offered by a reputable seller is a perfectly safe purchase, and you have a very nice selection. If you or your baseball collecting father are unable to determine if a seller is reputable or not then post the items in question.
  • I agree with the other posters, get a ball authenticated by PSA/DNA or JSA. James Spence, the founder of JSA, used to work for PSA/DNA and both companies are very highly respected. One of the eBay dealers I buy from a lot, Mill Creek Sports, has a nice selection of Ruth signed balls. Here is their website: http://millcreeksports.com/index.php

If money is not an issue, I would make sure to get a ball with a nice bold signature, not one that is faded. Good luck with your search and please post a photo if you do get one.
  • I can sell you a Ruth ball for 1 millllllioooooonnnnn dollars! Let me know if you're interested!

PSA/DNA or JSA... break out the wallet for one though. A "cut" autograph would be insanely cheaper.
