Old medals from grandpa's collection. Anyone know what they are?

jessewvujessewvu Posts: 5,063 ✭✭✭✭✭
My mom recently gave me a whole bunch of coins to look through that her dad had collected over the years. I'd say 80% was pocket change from the 60's and 70's, all circulated. There was some silver mixed in but nothing to good. I came across these medals and have no idea what they are or how to research them. Anyone have any ideas?

The dark medal weighs 140 grams, the bronze weighs 165 grams.

The three top medals look like funeral medals for the Italian king Vittorio Emanuele II; 14 March 1820 – 9 January 1878. According to a quick internet search, he was the King of Piedmont, Savoy, and Sardinia from 1849 to 1861. On 17 March 1861, he assumed the title King of Italy to become the first king of a united Italy, a title he held until his death in 1878. The Italians gave him the epithet Father of the Fatherland (Italian: Padre della Patria).

The date on the medals (16 February 1878?) must be the date of his funeral.

Henry Kreis was a sculptor who immigrated from Germany. The style of the 1935 medal may show the influence of Paul Manship since he worked in his studio at some point.

it is stamped on the rim,

    Are these worth anything?
  • I think the first one is the father of Victor Emmanuel, head of Italy pre Il Duch.

If I guess the value, can I win it in a "giveaway" ?

You asked largely the same questions regarding the same medals two years ago in this thread and received some answers that might help within that one, too.
