Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
The correct terminology--at least in my part of the country, is "I'll take a SWAG at it"

I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

I would imagine, it requires a college degree in Hand writing analysis. A hand writing analysis experts are used by quite a few government agencies. >>
I think this should be standard, but I have a hard time believing some of the authenicators are actually educated as analysts. It seems like many of them are just long time hobbyists who have seen a lot of signatures.
There's no end to the level of expertise there. With photos they can tell if a print was made within 2 years of the shot being taken which means they also know the date the pictures were taken. I tell you it's absolute wizardry.
On a more serious note, I am assuming with the autographs it does involve heany use of exemplars. Has anyone ever had an auto turned away bc there was no exemplar for comparison? If not that is one comprehensive library they have. In the end it is still just a non-guaranteed best-guess that you are buying.
