Guess the Grade - Bay Bridge - Grade posted in first post!

What say ye experts?

No one was even close! PCGS Rattler:

Added 9/30: Coinguy1 was kind enough to take the time to do a review of my 49 of the 50 piece "mostly rattlers" collection, and this coin received the "A' grade, plus it was considered to be undergraded at the 63 level. The plans for this one is to go into the rattler set, and hopefully, get a coveted gold bean sometime down the road.

There are a few ticks on the coin, but I went for the subtle color.

I think that at the time this was graded, being one of the more common commems, it just did not get a lot of attention from the submitter or squaking about being graded too low, as it was likely not worth the effort.

    That's a beauty, I'll guess 66 or better. But I will add I am no expert....

    I see nothing in the images which should preclude an MS67 grade.

    That said, there aren't a lot of MS67's around, so odds are that the coin grades lower than that.image

    I'll say 66. The reverse is super-clean, but that tends to be the case for Bay Bridge at 65 and higher. The obverse possibly has some minor ticks on the bear, but not only aren't there as many as on my 64, I have to look closely to pick them out.

    Actually, I see 2 hits, both on the bear's right (viewer's left) front leg. Start next to the E in WE and go towards 2:00 to find the other.

    If it's in a PCGS slab, it's an MS67+. If NGC, then MS68 star. Very nice!

    It could be a 67 or possibly just "genuine" for old cleaning...I think I see very fine scratches and there's some crust still in spots around the letters. I would like to see it in hand and under a loupe. I love this
    particular commem because both of my kids graduated from Berkeley and still live in the bay area....hence my avatar!

    It's hard to find one without marks on the bear. Too large an area to escape much. The only marks I see is one below "US" in trust and one on the roof below the clock tower on the back.

    I've reconsidered my earlier MS67 (I was on the ropes) and am gonna go on record with my gut feeling on this one: MS68

    It is so tough to grade from a picture. Some people are good at it but not me. I need the coin in hand.

    After reviewing the posted grade, this is a good example of how it is sometimes impossible to grade from a photo. Some of the best graders in the business weren't even close from the photo. We should remember this next time someone posts a 68 that looks like a 63. It can go both ways. As I keep repeating, the professional grader with the coin in hand has a big advantage over the internet grader looking at one set of pictures. --Jerry

    if I see a coin I really like, I wonder what it looks like in hand? Is it really nice or not? CAC is a big help for me in making the decision to buy or not.

    I had viewed a number of the OP's coins very recently. So, when I posted my MS67 grade guess, I did so, thinking I had probably seen the coin in question, and that it graded much lower than that. But, I tried to put that aside, and guess, based just on the images provided. The coin looks great in the images, but for whatever reason, not nearly as good in hand.

    Claychaser, please feel free to post my in-hand assessment of the coin - whether I thought it was an A, B or C and/or under-graded. And thanks for a fun thread.

    I don't remember what I graded it, but definitely not 66, and maybe not 65 (or even 64).

    OK, so what are we missing in the photo? Light scuffs or drags across the luster on the bear? Some scratches hidden in the highlights?

    The picture, to me, makes it look like it has big luster and very clean surfaces? BUT, I like more color on my Bay Bridges.

    When I saw the coin I did a quick look and then asked Claychaser what was up with the coin as far as grade. To me it looks much cleaner than a 63, I wish I had my 65 with me at the time. I thought the grade was a joke. I think I figured it more as a 65.

    It looks undergraded in the image and I suspect it would grade higher today....maybe not a 6 or 4 point jump but a 2 point jump would appear to be at least a possibility image
