When you think of the four major sports, who is identified as the coaching legend in that sport ?
Is it Vince Lombardi in football ? Is it Casey Stengel in baseball ? Is it Red Auerbach in basketball ? Is it Toe Blake
or Scotty Bowman in hockey ? Does any other coach exceed these guys as far as legendary status is concerned ?
I think college football probably has the most coaching legends then any other sport come to think of it.

I'd put Connie Mack on top in baseball. I agree with the other three.

I'm not going to take away anything from Knute Rockne, but if looking at the overall picture of wins, seasons, different era, etc, and a number of other factors, it's not even close. Paterno wins hands down. Actually, Bear Bryant should be a more fitting comparison to Paterno, not Knute Rockne.
Football is tougher. 4 mentioned above (Lombardi, Rockne, Paterno and Bryant) are worth consideration.
Baseball is tough.
Hockey, I have no clue.
From our friends at Wikipedia:
Thomas Wade "Tom" Landry (September 11, 1924 – February 12, 2000) was an American football player and coach. He is legendary for his successes as the coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He is ranked as one of the greatest and most innovative coaches in NFL history, creating many new formations and methods. He invented the now popular 4-3 defense, and the "flex defense" system made famous by the "Doomsday Defense" squads he created during his tenure with the Dallas Cowboys.
Landry won 2 Super Bowl titles (VI, XII), 5 NFC titles, 13 Divisional titles, and compiled a 270-178-6 record, the 3rd most wins of all time for an NFL coach. His 20 career playoff victories are the most of any coach in NFL history. He was named the NFL Coach of the Year in 1966 and the NFC Coach of the Year in 1975.
His most impressive professional accomplishment is his record for coaching the Dallas Cowboys to 20 consecutive winning seasons (1966–1985), an NFL record that remains unbroken and unchallenged. It remains one of the longest winning streaks in all of professional sports history.
<< <i>You gotta have consideration for Tom Landry in Pro Football.

I agree with your premise.
In my view, Lombardi is the popular choice, and I think Landry is a better choice, but in my opinion I feel Don Shula is the best choice...but I'd have no problem with the decision if the overall vote choice would be Landry.

Aren't you going to have your "Eagles Nation" pass revoked? Why are you messing with my view of the stereotypical Philadelphia sports fan?

C'mon, he was under .500 for his career.

Sorry, just can't get past all the cheating that went on at UCLA during Wooden's tenure. I think a better choice would be Pat Summitt or Coach K.
