Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

Comments

  • Seller did the worst job I have ever seen someone do on such a high dollar lot. The cards were loose wrapped in one sheet of bank like paper....the one on the end rubbed a lot, but the others did pretty good. Pretty saddening....but oh, well. The one that was rubbed...I have seen at least 3 versions of...so I guess I can replace it sometime.

Here is the one that rubbed...note the back.

I was going to ask why you put "G*nz*lez" in the title but then I was like..

    Ooooh, I get it. Heh.

They used his whole last name...Gonzalez has 2 z's. I need to O and the A to complete it. Likely will never find them...but you never know.

Who said the other week that player collecting is not cheap?

Yea, I am pretty pimped about them. Common lettermen's are usually listed around $125-150 with Brady and Manning in the $600-800 range. I have a little over $500 in the lot....so I think did alright. The last size tag I couldn't get the seller to go under $150...might be this one.

I have seen other laundry tags with different years and one that was a size 47, so there are others out there.

Plus, I bought them from who use to be the #1 Chiefs collector. Or at least he had over 100 Chiefs 1 of 1 for sale at one time, and when Kolby Smith kicked but a couple years ago....he listed about a dozen Kolby Smith auto 1/1 RC's. I had previously purchased one of the other 1/1's from him (and a Larry Johnson which I flipped). So hopefully, by getting them off him...he won't bid on any more, and if so, then it was a more then fair deal, knocking out my #1 competition, so to say.

The best card, not in the lot, is on eBay right now. The NFL crest shield from the front of likely the same jersey, likely card #3 in the card set numbering. Seller wants $400 obo and lowest I could get him to go was $225....so he either has to come down, or I need a big meteorite sale or something like that to justify it.

I understand Gonzalez has 2 z's, I guess you didn't get my humor that there are "two" z's out there like this so how can it be a 1/1?

You do have a good point. Maybe I could sue Topps for this? Settle for 100 or so custom made Tony Gonzalez 1/1's. If they can make them just for the Topps Vault store....

Too bad the seller didn't also include a stable of 88 high maintenance mail-order brides. Then he could have justified a BIN of $888,888.88 and he'd have eight eights in the price.

Cubs first night game: 8/8/88 but it was rained out. Phil Bradley led off the game with a home run for the Phillies, but it didn't count.

IT seems that several "Kansas City Chiefs collectors" are UNLOADING their rare Chiefs stuff to cash in...

What is the current fair market value for that Gonzo Lot? He has many of the key #1/1s in there!

It really isn't far from his asking price. I am sure he has ~$5000 into that collection. It really blows my collection away.

  • I thought I would comment a little on the prices of Gonzo cards.

When I first started playing with the 1/1's, Gonzos were only going the price of commons...and sometimes less. I picked up 3-4 under $10. But now I guess because of me and the guy above, they go for around the price of a Terrell Owens or a Randy Moss. I have only been collecting them about a year, not even that, but while I always, well, usually, get outbidded on the nicer ones, I did not notice any one person fighting me for them. The last 3-4 have went over Owens or Moss price, with plates hitting about $30 with shipping, and another Topps Vault created 1/1 hitting the same, and my snipes not even going off due to price. The non plate like ones are worth around $50 right now, and the nicer logo and like usually hit over $100. The laundry tag I just picked up I have a snipe of $70.05 set, and the underbidder was $70.00. Really just got lucky there.

So my point is, most of his cards are worth around $125 each. A few less, like the SP, but a few might fall in the $200 range. His sell price might be closer to old pricing of Gonzo cards...and who knows, he might entertain a $3000 offer or around. Hopefully, this signals the end of him bidding on them. That would mean my two main competitors for these cards dropped out in the last 3-4 months....assuming the main Chiefs guy continues to sell off.

I did score my last printing plate for less then nothing. I bought a lot of three plates for $17 delivered, and it was one of them, along with a baseball and another football, and 2009 Topps..and black. I listed the baseball for $17 and it instantly sold...so that was cool.

I guess the best thing for me, and likely to not happen, is that it sets there for a month and then he breaks it up. My goal is getting 88...and I am actually getting them 2-3x faster then I thought I would. On the flip side, it will slow down now that most of the 2010 have been released.

Should have taken before photos. This will likely be the only time I am glad to have a small bathroom.

The house is about 80 years old. This is my third major project since buying it, 5-6 years ago. The house itself is completely paid for.

Should have taken before photos but did not think about it. But here are a couple during construction photos. Will have to put up some board over the old slats. They cemented almost it together. The tub was about an inch too big....so they cut up two walls to make it fit. Replacing all the walls...and everything inside. Floor comes up next. Doing part of the work myself, should be able to have it finished under $2000....a lot better then I feared.

    image

    image

This spring I will likely rebuild the garage and maybe redo and expand the back deck, depending on time/funds/weather....

Edit: Decided the slats will go and have pulled them off now...well mostly. It is a lot more soundproof with most modern walls so I was wanted to leave it, but I guess it is best to go new everything...

Note it doesn't say superfractor on the back, but instead, just refractor, although Beckett labeled it as such. Not sure why Topps would do away with the superfractor term....collectors like the word it seems.
