Grading Wax Packs and Crossover service Questions

I'm new to the message board so I hope I posted this in the correct place. I have about 15 wax packs that I would like to get graded but I have a couple of questions - maybe you can answer them for me.

1 - I know PSA grades packs - do other grading companies grade them as well? If so - who?

2 - If they determine the pack to be "searched" or opened and then "re-sealed" - do they encapsulate the pack and notate it - or do they just send the pack back to you ungraded?

3 - I have a few GAI packs (I know they are no longer in business) - and wrinkles/crinkling does not seem to affect the grade. Is this similar with PSA?

4 - Does the condition of the gum affect the grade?

5 - Do you have any suggestions in determining if a pack has been re-sealed?

As for Crossover - I have a few SGC cards I would like to get in PSA holders if possible.

1 - In your experiences, do you generally get the crossover for at least the same grade when going from SGC to PSA?

2 - Do they ever return the card to you raw? IE - they think the card will crossover - crack it out and find something they missed while in the holder.

3 - Do you have to pay the grading fees if the card does not get graded/crossed over?

thanks a lot for your help!

    Global does.

2 - If they determine the pack to be "searched" or opened and then "re-sealed" - do they encapsulate the pack and notate it - or do they just send the pack back to you ungraded?
    Sent back to you ungraded.

3 - I have a few GAI packs (I know they are no longer in business) - and wrinkles/crinkling does not seem to affect the grade. Is this similar with PSA?
GAI changed names slightly, but are still in business. From the 4 packs I had graded with PSA when they first offered grading I felt they were all overgraded, and GAI agreed when I crossed them. They dropped about a grade each.

4 - Does the condition of the gum affect the grade?

5 - Do you have any suggestions in determining if a pack has been re-sealed?
read Mark Murphy's pack guide, buy some examples that you know are good (Steve Hart grades authenticity for PSA, although not the numerical grade, and his packs are solid)
Look for the seal, the fold lines, if the gum is the correct size.

For the most part, with some exceptions. Overall you should be pretty close. But keep in mind cards that are graded with PSA to begin with have been cracked and regraded, with swings a few grades either way. And there are lots of threads about cards being reviewed and getting bumped, so if at first you don't succeed......

I've had it happen a few times when going from PSA to SGC. Haven't had it happen the other way, but I"m sure it does.

3 - Do you have to pay the grading fees if the card does not get graded/crossed over?
    yup.

thanks a lot for your help!

that was a big help - thanks a lot!
  • One more related question...

Can anyone give me the basic over-view on grading wax packs? I got a few from GAI recently and I am more than confused by the results. I picked up an 8, 8.5, and a 9. I could tell the difference in condition from the 8.5 and 8 but they weren't as nice as I would expect. The 9 that came in was worse than both 8s. It actually has 3 holes in the outer package. That really got me confused with pack grading. Does it have more to do with its authenticity? Meaning, the higher the grade the more certain they are that it is unsearched? Any input would be helpful. Keep in mind all 3 packs are the same issue and all were graded by GAI.

The holes may have occurred after it was graded. I too wonder how they grade packs, but the most important aspect to me is the authenticity anyway....
  • My humble opinion.... All wax and cello packs should get out of GAI holders and into PSA holders.

There is a big problem, though, with wrappers getting tears in the PSA holders...I've been holding off sending in wax packs for that reason. Cellos eeem to be OK.
