What does a Proof Like Mercury Dime look like?

FairlanemanFairlaneman Posts: 10,424 ✭✭✭✭✭
Especially out in the fields? Will you see tons of small die polish in the fields? Are they usually double struck with very very distinct details? I have never seen one untill maybe this afternoon.

Thanks in advance.

It's not unusal to see fine striations in the fields.

I went Summer FUN and one dealer had his entire display made up of Mercs in 2x2s that were labeled "RARE" and "PROOF LIKE". The real deal was that they all had been given a bath in MS70 or something like that. I just laughed and kept walking.

Truthfully, a couple of dates in the early 40s do qualify sometimes and I think only NGC has been known to note it on the holder.

I am sure others will chime in to correct me if I am wrong on any of this.

As for what the look like...I am going to guess "shiny with some contrast for slightly mirrored fields". image

    Ken,

They shouldn't have die lines or polish marks. They should resemble proofs of the 1950's. Very few have cameo appearance.

I have seen (I own one) some regular issue coins that would almost pass for proofs they are polished so much.

My 1941-S looks more like a proof than my 1942 proof.

Of the ones I've seen designated as PL by NGC, all have had numerous die polish lines.

The 41S looks just like the 40S I received today. Hammered, somewhat flat in places, strike. Luster that does not look like business strike luster.

What do you mean by "They shouldn't have die lines or polish marks"? They in fact, often do, and that doesn't mean they're not Prooflike.

    Mark for clarification.

The Proof Coins shouldn't have polish marks; the proof likes do indeed have polish lines throughout.

Tony, your original response threw me, because the OP had asked about PL's, not Proofs.

I should have been more clear. My examples were a proof and a proof like.

41-S's have always been around. 25 years ago several rolls of 34-d's broke with heavily striated fields and some cameo contrast.
