I bought an unopened box of 25 or 50 (cant remember) of the proofs once and made 3 70's. I paid melt for them and that was like 4-5 years ago. I always thought it was a real nice design and always try to find them at the local shops when i give them a visit. I think i like them so much since its my birth year . I have yet to find a real nice toner for either the proof or uncirculated version.
For years, those were SOOOO hard (as well as expensive) to find in MS69. They are STILL 'expensive' (according to the CU guide, at $375 in MS69, but it's price is 'red' today). I remember my mom trying to put together a set of commem halves years ago (maybe 10 or so). Washington halves in MS68 were SO plentiful..... whenever an MS69 came around (and it wasn't often), it brought BIG money. Now, there's 278 in MS69 (still low by comparison). The Washington halves and the '89-D Congress halves are the only modern commem halves with not a single coin to grade MS70 (in our host's plastic).
