Need some advice from the experts on this Franklin

I love the toned coins, no news there, and so I like to dig through original and untouched Mint sets looking for obvious toners but also hoping for something special not seen on the other side.

Typical coin fanatic, you all know what I'm talking about.

So, I have this pristine double set 1958 set with some awesome toners and some fair ones. This particular Franklin looked promising, but when I got it out I noticed it was damaged and my first thought was dang, what the heck? Then after looking closer and remembering that this 58 set had ZERO signs that any coin was ever removed, I got to thinking this has to be an error that occurred at the Mint, but I also know not to take anything for granted.

What do you think?

Im not a 100% on this one but i believe that is simply just damage . Can you get a pic of the same area on the reverse?

Yes, I agree that it was damaged after being minted. At the mint? Probably.

I would say it was a small crack in the planchet prior to the strike. This usually happens when the blanking mill gets to the uneven end of the planchet strip, though there can be cracks in the planchet strip elsewhere for other reasons.

So, it is a genuine mint error, but not one that adds any value, I am afraid. I am sure you would rather have the coin without it.

im def going with damaged then . It just cant think of anything error wise that can cause that. What did the D mint coins look like in the set?

this coin shows both signs of planchet defects as well as what looks like post minting damage ....... puzzling to say the least

It looks like the Franklin shows a mildly cracked planchet. I also picked out a Franklin from a 1958 mint set that was nicely toned, but that had a minor clip, and PCGS certified it as a 5% clip.

Considering its relatively low mintage, 58-P has more than its share of minor planchet errors. Clips, laminations, etc.

I'm with Paw, the coin is definitely a laminated planchet, but looks to have some post strike damage as well.

Cool coin.

After squinting a while, I swear I see that the crack runs all the way through the coin (from the edge shot). It also looks like you can see the actual metal layering from the folded and refolded planchet.

So maybe the crack was bigger (like the wide cracked edges of dough when you roll it) and the minting process closed the gap a little but still didn't leave enough metal to fill up the Y. I don't see the post mint damage PP and BM, where are you looking?

Looks to be lamination with a cracked planchet.

Are you going to send it out to have it looked at? I am puzzled, I can see it going either way.

some of the closeup pix show marks/damage that would have been obliterated after the planchet was struck (if planchet flaws) - thus leading me to believe it has post striking issues as well
