What's the price of scrap metal in your area?

Just got a new stove today and within 5 minutes of putting the old one on the curb it was snapped up by a scrap dealer.

I asked him what he gets for scrap these days and he said "$185 a tonne".

I'm located close to Toronto Canada.

  • In mid Michigan it's common to see people driving down the street looking for scrap metal. Unfortunatly it is also common for metal items to be stolen.

Sounds about right for quality steel. It gets exported to the far east as a raw material.

Air Conditioner copper is pretty pricey, none left in my neighborhood.

"Interest rates, the price of money, are the most important market. And, perversely, they’re the market that’s most manipulated by the Fed." - Doug Casey

  • Steel/Iron $200/ton. I took a car in few days ago & received $400. Cut steel is $50-$60/ton higher
    Most cat converters $100
Copper wire with insulation still on $1/#
    Alum .50/#
    Alum wheels $15 each
    car batteries $5-6/each

That's about all I deal with
  • Nice to have something to compare to. I'm cleaning up the garage and part of the job will be clearing out the aluminum and copper that's been saved. Sure hope they'll pay more for wire without insulation; stripping the insulation was a pain in the butt.

  • It's over $3/# for #1 Cu I believe.
  • Sounds like it will be worth the efforts $ wise, and more space in the garage afterward. image

A couple years ago I called several scrap yards to have a open-top dropped off for steel scrap when we were cleaning up my Dad's place. No one would drop at a residential (actually an old farm)

Last summer we had a bidding war going on between 3 guys when we had a living estate sale to clear the place out for good.

There was a news report a month or so ago about multiple AC units being stolen off of beachhouses in the VA Beach/Newport News area. I guess this might have been the plan.

Read something in Fortune(?) about a GM plant in Detroit being stripped of million of $ of copper
  • There are a lot of homes that people just walked out of and left for the bank. It sounds like a lot of those homes are being stripped of copper. A year ago someone told me the police were at one of the places that buys scrap checking out what people were bringing in. I suppose someone with 25-50 AC units would be suspicious, they'd probably ask what you do for a living. Once in awhile I hear about particularly dumb crooks on the radio or tv "man, peoples juz liv dem outside, guess day dwant dem sos I help clean up da neiborhood an even make somes money fur helpen".

My neighbor across the street had a trailer stolen from behind his house. He had an idea that the guy he gave some scrap to came back and ripped it off; sure enough, he went to the local junk yard and there is was, busted. Another neighbor stepped out at night with his dog and caught a couple guys stealing metal from another neighbor. They had their truck parked in the driveway of the guy that had his trailer ripped off. All this is happening in a good neighborhood, but it's somewhat remote which is probably the reason.
