That's a tough one. I'd have to go with 1999. It may forsake assay medals and half cents, but I'd not get tired of the errors.

1837 A full range of interesting federal coinage, copper, gold and silver...plus all those Hard Times Tokens....Just a lot to choose from, and to fit any budget.

It is just too bad that they stopped the two cent, three cent silver and the half dime a few years before this. That would have made this a very neat set.

Tough call.

The advantage of 1916, you have Barber, Winged Liberty, Standing Quarter, Walking Half, Buffalo, Lincoln cent, a nice mix of gold including McKinley.

My other choice would be something in the 1790's. I simply can't narrow it down.

2008 - a treasure trove of interesting material, much of it extremely low mintage.

W-mintmarked Buffalo gold in 4 denominations, uncirculated and proof - the only year for fractional-ounce gold Buffalos, including the 1/4 ounce nickel-sized coin.

W-mintmarked Platinum Eagles in 4 denominations, uncirculated and proof, with a unique reverse (they change every year). With one exception, the 2008-W's were the lowest mintages in their series.

W-mintmarked Gold Eagles in 4 denominations, uncirculated and proof. The 2008-W uncirculated $10 quarter-ounce is the lowest mintage Gold Eagle of any denomination, at 8,883.

W-mintmarked Silver Eagles, uncirculated and proof, including the scarce uncirculated 2008-W reverse of 2007 error.

Four First Spouse $10 gold coins, including the Jackson and Van Buren "Liberty" coins featuring the classic Bust and Liberty Seated designs on the obverse (due to these presidents not being married at the time they were in office).

The attractive Bald Eagle commemoratives in 3 denominations, uncirculated and proof.

Plus the annual satin finish mint sets, silver and clad proof sets, and circulation strikes. Final year of the Lincoln Memorial cent.

All in all, a numismatically eventful year with many attractive and interesting coins.

If you could add, "AND you could have unlimited funds," I'd go for 1796. It's the only year in which a collector can put together a complete year set of early U.S. coins with all ten of the denominations that were authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792.
