On the hand-engraved 1849 pattern gold dollars, Judd-115 & 116, what kind of branch is it that goes around the square hole on the reverse?

    Thank you for the picture. One picture is worth four thousand, eight hundred and fifty-seven words, adjusted for inflation.

    Somebody suggested a different kind of flora, and I wished to double check my implession that it was laurel, that's all.

    looks to me like it could be

    hemlock or pus*sy willow

    or even birch before I would go with laurel

    An excellent point. We are talking about a planchet something in the range of 15 mm here.

    Longacre done this personally but the skill required was had by many given the sheer amount of hand engraved "love tokens" of the era that thoughtfully mutilated a good percentage of the surviving gold dollars.
