Hey, I have an idea... lay off the political threads
I don't know about you, but I come to these boards to discuss coins. I know it's shocking, seeing how the board is called the "U.S. Coin Forum." So when I come over here, I expect to see (and very much enjoy) threads on all facets of coins that have graced this country over the past 200+ years. Yes, there's lots to discuss and show off. In fact, an occasional thread on the milestones in a board member's life aren't even that bad, either. At least those threads are related specifically to coin collectors.
So what gives with influx of political threads as of late? I understand that some things in politics affect the coin business, especially with respect to taxes. That's fine. Discuss the actual policy, but don't diverge into a tirade about the government, bashing one side or the other. I can go to any news channel or probably millions of other websites if I want to see that. Thinly veiled attempts at political topics aren't exactly hard to spot. Choose a topic that is 100% political, write a sarcastic title, and then ask people if it will change their collecting habits. Right, that's in no way a political thread.
The vast majority of people on this board are Americans and over the age of 18. Therefore, if you don't like the government, change it when you vote. You're blessed to live in a country that gives you the freedom to elect your representatives, so do it. Luckily, you can keep that right even if you don't clutter this board with political threads. Amazing how that works.
And no, I'm not writing this as a disgruntled member of any political party. I'm writing it as someone who comes to these boards to get away from the political nonsense that is rampant everywhere else so I can enjoy a hobby that has every reason to transcend partisan politics--in fact, one that has nothing to do with partisan politics at all. I didn't like these threads during the last administration, I don't like them now, and I won't like them whenever the next administration is elected. They're tired and they're off-topic.
<< <i>Rule 6) This forum is about US Coins. If your post is not directly related to US Coins then this is the wrong forum. Do not post it or your posting privileges may be removed. >>
So here's one of my favorite pieces. I love the design, I love the color. Lady Liberty, draped in a flag, walking into a rising sun with an outstretched arm welcoming all to a free country. It's among the most beautiful designs ever produced by the US Mint, and its message is clear.

A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do...
Sort of, "My dog had puppies and they're so cute"! Followed up with, "show me a coin with a dog on it".
You get the idea. But yes, political threads should be banished from these coin forums.

every comment in every posting is a bigger task than you may think.
I think the moderators do what they can and I applaud there efforts.
I think most inappropriate comments are buried in threads
and I fell a little gulity of crossing the line making this post
because it off topic.
If they want to talk about federal deficits they might ask "How Will the Federal Deficit Affect Coin Collecting in Ten Years?"
If they want to talk about some big sports event they will post a commem (or other) coin which is mildly related to their favorite sports team.
Then when the thread goes in the direction they secretly wanted it to, they maintain "plausible deniability."
More egregious offenders will bring up whatever topic they want, and embed an unrelated coin image at the end of their post, just so they can claim the post is "coin related."
Some folks just don't have the time to look at all the threads and pick out the cool stuff for them.
While I'm at it, it would be great if thread titles would be longer to give more of an idea of what's it's about.
My favorite design.
Here in civilzation some of us try to respect boundaries. Failing occasionally, even slipping up and forgetting, that's part of being human.
Channeling hate? I see it here sometimes. Sometimes it's subtle. Sometimes not.
I guess I hate the haters. Oh wait, an inconsistency. Therefore anything I may have said should be discarded whether or not it can stand on it's own merits. I'm sort of hypocritical about other people's hypocrisy.
With all respect for the pain expressed in the motorcyclist thread a week or two ago, what was the poster THINKINGf? Not numsmatics. My nephew will need 12 operations to repair the damge he STUPIDLY invited on his bike. He played on the tracks and got hit.

Not coin related!
Some liberal friends are disgusted with my position on the death penalty.
Some conservative friends don't understand my position on death panels.
My Wiccan friends are trying to protect numismatics from Satanic oppression after The Evil One took our strongest proponent in Congress in the Delaware primary.
My Santeria friends want to know why I don't believe in voodoo economics.
My friends change the subject whenever I mention coins.
3 out of 5 not coin related!
I've been less guilty than others but then I haven't been here very long. In this thread and this rant I'm obviously trying to make up for lost time.'
No more Glenn Beck, just GoldLine comments for me. I will hold back half of my impulses to spit.

Just like the APN has a litmus point of political contact he thinks is appropriate others are allowed to differ without being wrong or not a true Americ...errrr Forum member. Another point is that the populations opinions really don't matter towards law just as APN's opinion doesn't count one bit towards Forum policy, the PCGS management and Mod's make the call and can chose to ask us or not just like the Government makes choices and may or may not ask us. The only thing that matters is your vote and your feet and you should vote for the people who think like you or hang around places that enforce rules that make sense to you and either way don't feed the fire by offering a counter point which in turn encourages what you are proclaiming against.

He does seem to be flying in the fog, somewhat. Airplanenut, just a suggestion, you might want to go to your instrument-training on this one, and right your attitude, as you're taking this matter way too personally, IMHO. Hell, even in my barbershop, from time to time, discussions on politics, religion and sex will invariably creep in, strictly against Orlando's rules. It's only when said indiscretions are habitual that they become problematic. Same idea, here, I'd imagine...
It would be great if at least this forum could stay neutral politically - this board could be an oasis of escape from the clamor of the outside world.

<< <i>Thanks, Jeremy. It's a good message, and one I endorse. That said, I love to read American history of the Pre- to Post-Civil War era - back when politics dominated virtually all of the social media of the day.

I think overall it stays on topic but may stray on some threads where numismatics happens to overlap with politics. You should avoid those if your little oasis is disturbed by such banter. There are plenty of other "happy" places to go here. All that said, I love your sig line.
I've grown in years to the point of almost being ripe, but not to the point of being stinky yet. All those years and experiences have given me a lot of wisdom, as anyone else my age. A person has to be very naive to not realize that politics effect all of our lives in almost EVERY thing we do.
For the younger crowd that just doesn't get the bigger picture yet, let me explain. Many laws are not written for some etopian(sp) idea of helping all of us simutaneoulsy. Many are written that are self serving to a certain group that will benefit, not necesarily because it's the right thing to do, but simply because they have the Political muscle to favor one interest or another. usually the segment that provides the votes. Many times it amounts to taking away from those that have and giving to those that do not. For instance, raising taxes thru heavy handed and costly burdensome 1099's in order to pay for giving Health Insurance to those that can't afford it. There are a zillion other ways to raise the tax compliance. That's a political decision that we all make judgements about whether it's the right or wrong thing to do. However you slice it though, it does effect our lives in a very real way, including us as coin collectors. It has the very real potential for countless small businesses to throw their hands up and shut the doors, take the easy way and let others pay their Medical costs. If you can't see that, then may I suggest you keep your thoughts to yourself about the threads until you live and learn, check back with us in a couple or more decades when you realize how profound politics have played a role in your life. I normally don't comment on the political theads, I let them run their course and perhaps learn something, or at the very least get some entertainment value out of it. Never would I be so naive to think they don't greatly influence our Hobby, a lot more so than knowing personal information that is passed as threads on the forum.
There are many instances that I think politics should be discussed more. For example, the politicians are allowing our hobby to be destroyed by allowing Ebay to openly provide a venue for thieves to openly sell counterfeit coins from China. What's stopping the government from assisting us, obviously their priorities are elsewhere because of , Guess what ....... POLITICS. I think we should all become rallied behind getting some legisilation passed to protect us and our heritage.
I personally do enjoy reading the political threads that directly relate to this hobby, i.e. 1099's. Keep them coming, lets not bury our heads in the sand.
Whether it be subliminal or intentional, interpretation is sometimes left up to the reader.
I do believe our moderators do a fine job here to halt a lot of this nonsense in it’s tracks, a watch dog I am not…skipping over what I deem not worthy is a whole lot easier and keeps my blood pressure in check.

I personally believe that there is (or should be) some substantial wiggle room for what is or is not coin-related. In any community, people brought together for a common interest or purpose, will, over time, get to know each other better and explore other common interests. Additionally, the initial interest that brought the community together may not be as important to individuals as it was when they joined together. Kranky and I have been regularly privately messaging about the Steelers here for at least five years, occasionally spilling the discussion into threads on the forum.
What is important is that the forum members treat each other respectfully, and this is especially the case when the subject moves to controversial areas. It is probably better to avoid political discussions on this forum not because they are not coin-related, but because they are divisive and tend to weaken the sense of community. In the same way that I would not go into a room full of my colleagues and disgorge my political opinions du jour, I would not do the same here.
So I guess that I would say I agree with Jeremy but for different reasons.

Of course if somebody posted "Obama was born in Kenya" or "Bush killed the country" then I tend to agree with Airplane Nut. Keep it the heck out of here.

OK, let's add this wiggle from Miss Teen South Carolina:
"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as in, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq and everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uh, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, should help South Africa and should help Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children."
Just some idle free association!
