Signs that someone is a novice collector

What are some signs that someone is a novice collector?

When you refer to Beckett.

When you say, "This card is in good shape for its age."

When you are still holding on to that 1988 Topps case thinking it will send your kids to college.

When you talk to someone about baseball cards and they say, "I've got some real old ones." And you say, "Really, what years are they." And they say, "They are at least 20 to 25 years old."

Chime in.

I sold a few cards at the beginning of the season and as I was getting ready to catalog what was included a girl I work with came in to see what I was doing. She gasped and said...."Ken Griffey Jr.!!!! Why are you selling any his cards, those will ALL be worth millions someday! image

True Story - I have a guy that comes into my store on a regular basis and he's always trying to get me to buy his unopened garbage.

He has a few decent items, but wont sell those unless I buy the who lot of them. He has an unopened case of 89-90 Fleer basketball, which isnt bad, but not a huge investment and a couple boxes of 1977-78 Charlie's Angels which I see on the BBCE website at $200 or so a box. In order to get those items, I have to purchase over 500 other boxes at only $2-$4 each of Topps/Pro Set Desert Storm, The Little Mermaid, Smurfs, Mars Attacks (1980's version) and stuff like that, which no one buys anyway.

But the funny part is, he also has an unopened case of 1989 Donruss for sale. I think BBCE had these for about $120 a case not too long ago and maybe still do. Anyway, he asks me if Im interested in it. Now, I realize that 89 Donruss will never be worth anything, but, the lure of some of the rookies in it, makes it a fairly easy sell for 50 cents a pack and I actually sell a box or so a month of this, so I offer him what BBCE is selling them for, figuring I will save the shipping on the item. He tells me, and I quote "Well, I paid $200 for these back in 1989 and I would hate to lose money on it!!". REALLY??? He bought this case 21 years ago and is still waiting to show a profit or break even on it. I told him he will be waiting a few decades before those sell for $200 again.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

When you spend countless hours on eBay setting up individualized listings for 88 and 89 topps baseball singles.

Also, when you pick your nose and wipe the boogar on a '52 Mantle.

I wouldn't consider myself a novice collector (even though I don't have any really valuable cards or a high dollar collection) but I VERY rarely buy ungraded vintage and it has NOTHING to do with the registry. Sure grading companies make mistakes but it still offers some protection. Are Spence, Fogel, or Young novice collectors because they only buy graded?

If you refer to SMR when trying to sell a card, you are either a novice or trying to rip off someone.
  • They buy individual retail packs.

Everything they own, they think it's mint.

I've gotten some results back from PSA that make me think my prostate has been given the once over. image
  • When you get back into collecting in 1998 by picking up Collectors Choice packs at Wal Mart, I won't mention any names but boy was that a big waste of money.
  • You buy an expensive card from ebay, and you don't send the card into a TPG until after the 45 day buyer protection has expired, and the card comes back trimmed, altered or not authentic.

    You collect hockey
  • When you dont do whatever you can to learn about the hobby you choose to participate in.
When I got into collecting comics I sought out information to learn about the ins and outs, the good bad and ugly, the trustworthy and the swindlers. I learned. I learned that one of the most knowledgeable members on a board I first joined was the biggest comic doctor and con-man in the industry.
It is the same thing that I am doing for baseball cards.

If you dont do your homework, if you dont learn, then it is very hard for you to complain when you get burned.
