Best date and grade Morgans?

I am trying to find out what dates and PCGS grade Morgans I should be looking for at a coin show I will be going to. I have a budget of about $4000. total (I know its not much) to spend on a Morgan. I will be looking at holding this coin for 5 years before selling. THANKS!

  • A DMPL Carson City, or better yet, the best grade 1889-CC you can afford, maybe XF45 or AU50.

1893-S and 1894 get lots of press, but the 1889-CC seems to be the harder one to find. Still, 1893-S STARTS around your budget range, so if this is a special occasion and you're working on a Morgan set, do the 1893-S. But, if you are looking for an investment return, get the 1889-CC.

But most of all, get a coin with personality and eye appeal.

If you're looking to invest your money and are not extremely well versed on coins, grading and the coin market, you are facing long odds. What, if anything, do you like about Morgan Dollars, in particular, and why?

Do not buy anything raw unless you really know what you're doing.
I would suggest sticking to PCGS and NGC graded coins.
I would look for coins with CAC stickers unless you really know what you're doing.
Avoid anything that's graded genuine or net or details by anyone unless you really know what you're doing.

Something with original, natural, problem-free surfaces (for the grade) that has no distractions is the way to go. Bargains are out there, but they're tough to find with key dates like 1893-S, 1894-P and 1889-CC. Those three dates would be my recommendation.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Definitely agree about getting coins that are certified, and certified by PCGS or NGC.

If you aren't very familiar with coins, then before you spend $4000, get familiar with coins! But, I get the impression that you are already knowledgeable; you have 471 posts and you're looking for PCGS-graded Morgans.
