1700 Salzburg 1/4 Taler

I do not buy many fractional talers yet this one has the original crisp look to it. It is still in transit, and I am betting on a potential GEM grade from the slabbing factory.

Opinions welcomed.

nice coin... I still think some of these in high grade are quite tough- the problem seems to be collector interest

Thanks coinkat. I agree that interest is lower for these compared with the Taler size coins. What got my attention was the quality of strike and condition for a 310 year old coin.

I have one from the Hall Mint- I think it is 1740 or so- nice and graded 63

Stunning piece. Tough to grade by pic alone, but I would wager that it is either a 64 or 65.

Much lower than I would have expected. My guess wasn't even in the ballpark. I interpreted the soft spots on the hands and child to be a soft strike, but they must have interpreted it as wear. They certainly see more coins than I do.

Well, I just don't see it grading 55 from the picture. Even if it is wear on the high points, a 58 would be the very least I'd have guessed. The fields look great, it has super toning, looks from the picture to be 63 or 64. It's a very nice piece, and incredibly well preserved.

BTW, who graded it?

Since you do the registry over there, resubmission is a good idea. I'm curious as to how it will come back after a second look. Please keep us updated if you do try again.

Personally, I'd leave it where it is, maybe stick a piece of tape over the grade.

I remember this one Zohar. I was gonna add to my comment - "don't be surprised if it comes in at AU58 but it'll be a darn gorgous AU58 at that!" but didn't want to dissapoint you..I noticed the subtle wear on a number of high spots - the gorgous surfaces and color really mask it and NGC saw. I believe a regrade is a waste perhaps you'll get 58 but regardless its a great piece enjoy it even as a 55

I agree. The bishop looks worn, but the stunning obverse detracts the not so advanced graders among us. I hadn't seen this thread, but it's interesting to notice that total turnaround from purchase to posting its grade was near two months.


Turnaround in PCGS Paris has yet to exceed 2 weeks. A friend is thinking of submitting a bunch on site and collecting them the next day, all tiers included. The total value is big enough to justify a return trip to Paris from Athens.
