Who's the most popular post-war after the Big 4...

of Mantle, Clemente, Mays & Aaron. What are thoughts on who would make the Top 10? I'm sure some other names would be Williams, Koufax, Rose, Maris, Ryan, Yaz, etc. but it'd be hard to narrow it down to 10.

  • Are you referring to rookie cards? or just players only?

    1. Mantle
    2. Mays
    3. Aaron
    4. Clemente
    5. Koufax
    6. Williams
    7. Rose
    8. Ryan
    9. Jackson
    10. Seaver

A few things I would say about this list: I would put Musial on the list; but not enough topps cards. Same with Jackie Robinson--just not enough cards. Possibly Bench, Yaz and Killebrew; but I'll stick with my 10. Clemente could probably be #2. He is incredibly popular. Always has been.

    These threads are always fun.
  • I would have to agree with Mickey. As much as I hate saying it, Musial isnt as popular as some people think in terms of collecting. There are only 28 people building the Musial Basic set and 18 building Musial Master.

    1. Mantle
    2. Clemente
    3. Aaron
    4. Mays
    5. Ryan
    6. Koufax
    7. Williams
    8. Rose
    9. Reggie Jackson
    10. Yaz, Killebrew or Seaver. Might think about throwing Cal Ripken into this as well. Very popular player.

Koufax, Ryan, Musial, Rose, T. Williams.

For some reason, Ted cards never sell as well as I think they should. Koufax cards ALWAYS sell well.

I'll flip the question - what HOF'er should be more popular but isn't? Frank Robinson is the dude for me.

Frank Robinson or Ernie Banks for me.
  • Talking about players only, not rookie cards. Here's my list based on my experience:
    1. Mantle
    2. Clemente
    3. Aaron
    4. Mays
    5. Koufax
    6. Williams
    7. Rose
    8. Ryan
    9. Yaz
    10. Maris
  • I always hear dealers say they can't sell a Frank Robinson card or a Willie McCovey card(except for rookie card).

    Ron Burgandy,
I would say Seaver then Schmidt (won like 12 gold gloves), Frank Robby would be 3rd to me---Hell of a player and yes very underrated.

I actually think Banks is a touch overrrated.....Please don't anyone yell at me.

I still scratch my head why Clemente was not a member of the "All Century Team" He is one of the most popular players of all time if you collect him or not.

I think Master Sets might be a better identifier.
Collector of most things Frank Thomas. www.BigHurtHOF.com
  • I also think that guys like Griffey and Thomas would be VERY high on the list because they played recently and had/have a huge following. They have so many cards (inserts, GU, autos, parrallels, base, etc.) that it makes grading all of them to start a registry set cost prohibitive. So even though they don't show up very high on the list they probably have many more collectors than that list represents.

Edited to say that Ross has a good point.

Actually the fact that you must show both first and last name indicates they should not be on the list. I'm sure they are well liked locally but I believe the list is nationwide. I know Dale Murphy played for the Braves but who did Nick Saban play for?

  • That list is awesome however it doesn't accurately answer the question.

For example the Derek Jeter Basic set was just created not even 4 months ago and many don't know it even exists.

The numbers show what I am talking about.

The Derek Jeter Master Set has 27 registered sets.
The Derek Jeter Basic and Collector Issues has 12 registered sets.
The Derek Jeter Basic Set has 4 registered sets.
The Derek Jeter Basic Topps has 14 registered sets.
The Derek Jeter Master Topps has 7 registered sets.
The Derek Jeter Rookie Set has 33 registered sets.

Sweet thread. That list is very informative and is the ultimate vote.

Here is a real Hogan card.

  • A few thoughts on the list KbCards posted:

    - I knew Mantle would be #1, but honestly I thought it'd be by a wider margin.

-Obviously the horrible, racist, ungrateful attitude Willie Mays has displayed over the years has come back to bite him & cost him some fans. He should be top three IMHO.

    - Wow, I guess Teddy Ballgame just doesn't have enough cards? Or Maybe his early Playball & Leaf cards are too expensive for most collectors? He's waaaaaaaaaay down on the list!!
  • Mantle

  • My question for you folks is this: I started watching baseball and collecting cards in late 1973, shortly after Clemente's death. I probably watched him in the 71 Series with my dad, but I just don't remember it. Obviously he was huge in Latin America, but was he this popular in the USA when he was still alive, or did he become much bigger later on? Because to be honest, when I look at his accomplishments and those of Al Kaline, there doesn't seem to be a huge difference, but in popularity it is enormous!

Dale Murphy, my all time favorite player.

    Ron

Murphy finished his career with 398 home runs (19th in MLB history at the time of his retirement) and a .265 lifetime batting average. His MVP awards in 1982 and 1983 make him one of only four outfielders in major league history with consecutive MVP years; at the time, he was the youngest to have accomplished the feat. His many honors also include seven All-Star appearances, five Gold Gloves, and four Silver Sluggers. Murphy led the National League in home runs and RBI twice; he also led the major leagues in home runs and runs batted in over the 10-year span from 1981 to 1990. One of the most productive and decorated players of the 1980s, Murphy led the National League in games, at bats, runs, hits, extra base hits, RBIs, runs created, total bases, and plate appearances during the decade. He also accomplished a 30-30 (30 home runs with 30 stolen bases) season in 1983. Murphy played in 740 consecutive games, at the time the 11th longest such streak in baseball history. His jersey number ("3") was retired by the Atlanta Braves on June 13, 1994. In 1997, Murphy was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame & Museum.

  • A lot has to do with the person. Who he was, what he went through, etc. Obviously his final act has given him a status of immortality as well. Looking at just the numbers, you are right. He is the best hitter, average wise, during the decade of the 60's and may have been the greatest defensive right fielder of all time. Playing in Forbes Field didn't help his power numbers, especially with his being a line drive hitter. I just think Clemente's popularity has to do with the complexity of the man and what he did.

He was one of the few players that could beat you at everything. Both offense and defense. Not to mention great person and what he stood for off the field.

Willie Stargell for me. Cant believe his rookie card is not worth more. >>

The fact that its an ugly ass card is a big part of the problem.

    Powdered,
Clemente went above the baseball diamond. He fought for equal rights. He did things to help out children with poverty as well as help them learn the game of baseball. When his country was devastated by an earthquake he jumped up to help and ultimately gave his life for that cause. He wasn't just giving money to the earthquake victims he was physically loading supplies on the plane and things like that and was going to deliver them. On the diamond he was a fierce competitor who won numerous batting titles and was the best right fielder in the game for a number of years. He also excelled greatly when the spotlight was on him as evidenced by his W.S. MVP in 1971. I will never forget the throw he made to third "AWESOME". 5 tool player.
  • No doubt about that Mickey. He gave his life doing that. What I wondered though, was he as popular in the 60's as he became posthumously? I also want to comment on those registry lists. There are sets that I have not registered on simply because I know that I cannot complete them. For example, I love Ted Williams and I have a couple of nice PSA cards. But, realistically I won't get anywhere near completing that anytime in the next ten years or so. So, I am not even registered. I would imagine that others might feel the same way. Which might mean that there might be more Mantle fans out there that collect his cards, but aren't on the player set, because they know that the 51 Bowman and 52 Topps cards will be too much money. Just a thought.

    Powdered,
No, Clemente was not as popular in the 60's as when he died and after. But, I'm basing this on an American opinion. I guess in Latin America he was practically a god when he played. All the kids wanted to be like him. I guess women loved him also; as he was a great looking man. He stood up as a voice for the people when it was tough to do so. Very honorable man. I actually think baseball should do something huge in his honor and retire his # throughout the majors. It's athletes like him that should be celebrated as often as possible.

Amen! There are a few unfortunate major multi-player rookie cards in the 60s/70s/80s but I always thought his was the worst looking of the bunch. At least his other early cards look decent.

Surprised to see Tom Seaver cards are as popular as they are, given his unfriendly rep.
  • Surprised no one mentioned Griffey, one of the most popular of all time.

    Mantle
    Griffey
    Nolan
    Ripken
    Mays
    Jeter
    Pujols
    Bench
    Clemente
