Is it me or are 1979 and 1980 Topps baseball wax trays drying up?

I've been following Topps wax trays for about 10 years and I'm starting to notice that the '79s and '80s--which used to be quite plentiful on ebay-- starting to be offered less. When they sell they bring over $50. (They used to sell for about $25-$30.) Yes, there was a 1980 that sold for $28 a few weeks ago but I've noticed in the last few months that when '79s and '80s are generally offered they are 1) generally buy-it-nows and 2) the buy-it-now price is up to $75-$100.

Has anyone here been buying these?

  • Hi Red - I've noticed the values creep up over the past 2-3 years.....not sure why on the 80's - I've seen plenty of PSA 9 Henderson rooks on ebay around $200.

'79's are too much of a centering crapshoot for me to open.

But I think you're spot on.

I'm an avid collector of trays and have all years from 1974-1980. The prices seem to vary widely on these according to condition, and I like them because of the packaging and because they are difficult to tamper with.

P.S. If anyone wants to purchase a 1978, 1979 tray or a 1980 tray for a very reasonable price, please feel free to PM me..image

I have never had good luck with trays and avoid them now. All of my cards are always bumped from being right next to each other.

...but to answer the OPs question...I stopped following the sales of hockey trays since I stopped buying them -- but it seems like they are going for more than they were in 2006.

I've bought several 1980 vending boxes and packs over the past few weeks. I've wondered why the wax treys are considered so much more valuable than rack packs or loose wax packs.

Is it just the collectibility factor of the treys?
