Recent Pickups...why aren't these all graded 1 grade higher??

Hi guys,

New to the 57s but these things are really clean and sure look like they should be graded higher. Any thoughts or am I missing something?

Jeff

  • Hard to tell by just a scan but the Dodgers & Yanks cards both look like some surface issues. All nice cards either way.
  • Fantastic cards, on the Aaron there is a yellow line on the bottom where the border starts maybe a printing registration thing, also appears to be a scuff in the bottom border, dodgers-top left corner and snow, yankees-bottom corners and snow. Just a guess on my part, and I'm sure on any given day they could get a bump.

PD is mild on the Aaron and more significant on the other 2, but enough to lower the grades from what they appear at first glance. Very typical on '57s...

speckling is always going to drag you down....as for the Aaron, yeah probably the registration thing, but that's a sweet looking card which i'd have a very tough time giving up were it mine. image

I don't agree with the comments so far. They should be at least a half grade higher.

They have not been generous lately with 50's material.

  • I have a '57 Banks PSA 7 that I think is high-end for the grade...... your Hank blows that card out of the water! That is about as nice a "7" as you will ever see.

Pretty sure the snow got you on the other two; although I am far from an expert when it comes to '57s.

  • not my favorite set, but in that condition they are fantastic.
  • Aaron should be at least 7.5 if not 8
    other two look correct..........surface issues

The 57 is my favorite Hank Aaron Topps issue. Yours is very nice Jeff. I love the centering on that card.
  • '57 Aaron is beautiful... but what is on the bottom border under the M in Milwaukee? Maybe that mark is knocking it down a grade. Definitely a nice Aaron though.
  • Grades to me anyways, have been all over the place. I send cards in under my name and a couple of other members because of the crap shoot. I have cards that are in PSA 6 holders that look like easy 8's or higher. A fellow collector send in a 300+ card sub and about 100 of those cards were breakouts from his previous subs. It went 50/50. Half the cards came back a full grade higher and the other cards came back a full grade lower. I sent him 17 cards that were mine and my cards did do better then his but still not what i was expecting.
Usually you don't do to bad when cracking and resubmitting but in his case the only person who profited was PSA. Should he try a 3rd time ??

So my point is resubmit them because the grades do not look like they fit. Sure PSA will get more money out of you but we have all been here before. Some just to many times before.
PS. Those are sharp cards. Look with the loop on those corners first and be honest with yourself. Then if you still feel they are undergraded, break them out !!

  • I don't have a ton of experience on the '57s, but I just pulled out a few 6s and 7s I've got (not as big of names, but including HOFs Ashburn and Wynn), and compared to mine it seems yours could be graded higher. I would definitely resubmit the Aaron card, and maybe the Dodgers Sluggers card depending on exactly what that top left corner looks like. I do think the speckling on the Mantle/Berra might keep that at a 6. Either way, good luck.

  • The only one I see that is worthy of cracking and resubbing is the Aaron, that card would not look out of place in a PSA 8 or on a good day 8.5.

the other 2 as mentioned have snow and the top left corner on dodgers sluggers.

All 3 cards are very nice for their grades! How is the centering on the backs, any smudges or stains ect ect ?

I see nothing to down grade the Dodgers card from an 8.

The 57 Aaron has a touch on the lower right corner and has something going on near the left corner PD. That being said...it has the appearance of NM-MT.

The Yankees card I actually agree with. Here's my reasoning for this. Just because 50% of all the Mantle Berra cards in 7's and 90% 8's are overgraded does not make this a 7. The grader got this correct using proper grading standards. That's alot of print on that card.

That first one looks awesome! I have given up on knowing why a card grades the way it does.

    Hi Jeff.

The Dodgers sluggers card is one of my all time favorites.

I see no difference between my 8 and your 7.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff today. He came to my home, we talked cards, he bought me (and my son) lunch, and taught me how to more effectively use my scanner. Jeff is a super guy.

Nice looking cards. I remember many years ago PSA was so tough on the 57's that I refused to send any cards into get graded. There are tons of 7's in my set they will probably never get upgraded because they are better than most 8's. I have seen alot of borderline 57's lately, but those are probably properly graded. The Aaron might bump on a good day.

    Good luck with the set.
