Most Beloved Sports Team for a City

I just read the ESPN article on the 85 Bears Link. I was then thinking what are the most beloved sports teams in other cities (ideally one team for all sports but not required). Here's a shortlist of a few I can think of (IMHO):

Indianapolis
2006 Colts: first championship for the state

Chicago
1985 Bears: defense for the ages

Boston
2004 Red Sox: idiots break the curse

Kansas City
1985 Royals: Brett and Saberhagen bring home the only title in baseball

Philadelphia
1980 Phillies: Not sure if the 2008 Phillies or the 82-83 Sixers have surpassed this team

Cincinnati
1975 Reds: I'll give it to the first title for the Big Red Machine

Portland
76-77 Trail Blazers: Only title for the city

Seattle
78-79 Sonics: Only title for the city (although since the team's moved, this might have changed)

San Antonio
98-99 Spurs: First title for the city

New York
27 Yankees: obviously, a lot of options here, but I'll go pre-war school with the Murderers Row Yanks

New Orleans
2009 Saints: First title

Tampa Bay
2002 Bucs: First title (pretty easy to do when the city only has one title, .... what? The Lightning have won a Cup?)

Comments

  • I'm from New Orleans and am a huge Saints fan. Oddly enough, the 2006 Saints meant a lot more to me than last year's Super Bowl winners. I loved that team for coming back home after a year in San Antonio and a horrible season and giving us all something to cheer for. I also wonder about Kansas City. The Chiefs have a big fan base there, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Chiefs teams of the past are more beloved than the 85 Royals.

The '85 Bears were more than just a great defense - that team had a lot of characters - from McMahon to the Refrigerator, Payton, Singletary, Ditka, et al. A pretty amazing team and season.

    Baltimore?

    Brooklyn?

    Los Angeles

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • 1997 Broncos......they finally win a super bowl game.
  • Brooklyn
1955 Dodgers: this is easy since this is the team that finally broke through against the Yanks. Pee Wee Reese for the last putout.

    Baltimore
1970 Orioles: there's a lot of love for the later Ripken teams, but I'll go with this one with Earl Weaver, Jim Palmer, Flanagan, Robinson and the other Oriole greats.

    Los Angeles
84-85 Lakers: tough one because there are so many great Laker and Dodger teams. I'll go with this one since it's the first time Magic beat Bird for a title in the NBA.

    Detroit
96-97 Red Wings: there's a reason, I avoided these cities. Because I'm clueless about them. I'll go with this team for Hockeytown.

    St. Louis
82 Cardinals: Whitey and Ozzie, what's not to love?

    San Francisco
81 Niners: The Catch wasn't in the Super Bowl, but paved the way for this team of destiny.

    Oakland
76 Raiders: Madden and a team of Hall of Famers break through.

    Washington DC
82 Redskins: first title in the Gibbs era

    Dallas
92 Cowboys: "America's team" rises again

    Houston
94-95 Rockets: first title for the city

    Pittsburgh
74 Steelers: the Steel Curtain as the original immovable force

    Cleveland
48 Indians: I think Cleveland is the most cursed sports city without a title in eons. Here's the last one.

    Buffalo
90 Bills: Buffalo doesn't even have a title, but the Bills teams are still much loved.

    San Diego
84 Padres: No titles here either. This Gwynn team made it to the Fall Classic.

    Minneapolis
91 Twins: let's go with this with Jack Morris pitching 10 innings of shutout ball in game 7.

    Green Bay / Milwaukee
96 Packers: Favre brings the Lombardi trophy back to Titletown.

    Phoenix
2001 Diamondbacks: Schiling and the Big Unit bring a title to the desert.

    Atlanta
95 Braves: the Big Three break through

    Toronto
61-62 Maple Leafs: pulling stuff out of my wazoo

    Montreal
55-56 Canadiens: more of the same stuff
  • I think for Los Angeles the case has to be made for most beloved dynasty versus a single team and I don't know if it's possible to declare a winner.

How do you pick between Wooden's UCLA teams (1964 to 1975) and the Showtime Lakers (1979 to 1988)?

The last one for the indians but not for cleveland. The Browns won championships in the 60's.
