Testing out the new Epson V300 scanner

UPS man just dropped it off, thought I would test it out on some slabs.....didn't have anything new/interesting to scan so I made my own slabbed customs.

I just got one also...WOW on the scans. What a difference from my old one. Here is an Aaron I just picked up and a few raw cards that I was experimenting on scans with.

    Jeff

PS...how is the Aaron only a 7...come on!!

Nice scans guys. I had an Epson printer and I loved it. When it finally broke down my wife bought me a Canon printer for Christmas. Im not very pleased with how "grainy" the scans look on the Canon. My next scanner will be an Epson.
  • That '57 Aaron looks like a 9!
  • Definitely $70 well spent, now I'll have to spend the weekend rescanning my registry cards.

Where is the link to where that scanner is for sale? By the way...NICE SCANS!
  • This is the place I got mine, $69.95 with free shipping good thru Sept. 6 V300

My current scanner, the lid has a tendency to not want to stay up....I wish it wasn't free moving. I also wish it had a black background instead of white......how is the Epson in regards to those two features?
  • Lid is free moving, but leans back far enough that it stays open with ease. The background is white, I think most scanners are, but scanning with the lid open gives you a black background.

I just received my Epson V300 Scanner. A brightness opinion is available in the Home Mode but not on the Professional Mode where enlarging images are made. This is not good - or am I missing something?

To acheieve those gorgeous scans, do they come that way out of the box, or is there any tweaking involved?

That is a great question. I want to buy one soon but wonder if I need some photoshop software or any special skills!image

Aconte, I bought the V30. It is my understanding it is the same as the V300 minus slide holder. Since I don't have film or anything like that, I went with the cheaper one.....
PS - I just picked mine up off Amazon for $60 delivered. I got it in 3 days, and I thought that was a GREAT price for a brand new scanner!

The settings I use are posted on the last post of this thread and a couple comparison scans between 2 different all in 1 scanners and the V33 are inside the thread somwhere and now here too

    A different V30/V33/V300/V330 thread

The best pic is of course the V33 I just bought but if you notice the gold border actually looks better on the all in 1 scanner scans. The reason is that I had scanned that without using the Epson scan software that by default, adjusts the gamma to 2.2. When using the Epson Scan software at 2.2, cards look exactly like they do in person to my eyes. I'm at work now or I would rescan that card at 2.2 to show the difference. I'll try to get it done tonight though

    Thanks for the comparison!

Here is the same card using Epson Scan software using the default setting of Gamma 2.2. Notice the gold border is now actually gold looking. It is now exactly how the card looks in real life

and strangely, I turned the card sideways and it scanned like this:

I think that's because of the refractive aspect of the light source and the angle of the "folds" in the fabric. You might try scanning your refractors sideways and see if you get a better result. I know on some scanners, putting the lid down helps refractors while leaving the lid up works better for slabs...

All I know is that I love my Epson and I'm glad so many others have taken the suggestion and are satisfied with their purchases. For the money, it may be the best on the market.
