  • So you quote VCP when trying to knock down the prices of my cards but the PSA SMR when you're trying to push the sale of the 1979 Topps rips? Your standards have now been doubled!

  • Cherry pick much? I'm not making a bad comparison at all. I have made a direct comparison as to how we are both using PSA SMR as a guideline for quoting card pricing. You for some reason can't identify the hypocrisy in using one favorable source of data to support your sales while using another unfavorable source to criticize mine. In essence, you like to use data supporting high prices when promoting a sale but utilize the low pricing when taking the buyers point of view - my apologies, but that sounds like a typical card dealer to me.

How about you show some VCP data on the other cards from the 1979 set as they average much less than your PSA SMR quoted prices? I'm also curious as to why you specifically picked those three cards from my lot to quote? Did the other cards not support the point you were trying to illustrate? I wouldn't be able to comment on that as I do not subscribe to VCP.

I've also seen a number of Topps Gretzky rookies go for significantly less than $1400 over the last 12 months. Why don't you apply all sales over this period to illustrate this?

Finally, please note I did not indicate that I expect PSA SMR as the realized pricing for my cards. I simply used this as a starting point and I would obviously be willing to give a discount to book value for the entire lot. Otherwise, I wouldn't have noted that I would accept the best offer for these cards. I am not a professional dealer and am a very reasonable person to work with. I am only selling these cards because I have decided to switch my entire focus to collecting rookie cards only. That being said, I would happily consider trades with anyone who is interested and has vintage rookie cards in their possession.

I am not a dealer, I just wanted to give you the $$ you should expect the people that post here to pay for the cards you offered. I wish you nothing but good luck in selling your cards and as a hockey collector I wish they would command higher prices, but alas they do not.
Obviously Gretzky is the reason anyone gets the 1979 packs, as far as the other players card values in 1979 here are the current SMR and VCP.

    Dryden - PSA 9
    SMR - $35
    VCP - $126

    Howe - PSA 9
    SMR - $75
    VCP - $34

    Hull - PSA 9
    SMR - $55
    VCP - $14.50

    Bossy - PSA 9
    SMR - $45
    VCP - $100

e64mtd - Don't you hate how facts mess up a perfectly good argument image
Collecting Topps, Philadelphia and Kellogg's from 1964-1989
  • Ha ha, funny! It seems every internet group forum has it's "police force" who love to enforce the rules for the safety and comfort of others, especially against someone with a low post count whom is likely new to the area and perhaps considered part of the "unwashed" masses.

As I said before, I don't have a subscription to VCP and have no ability to analyze and discuss the values assigned to the cards by "jimrad" but the facts in no way "messed up a perfectly good argument". I wasn't arguing about the value of my cards; I was pointing out the hypocrisy of "jimrad" using one set of data (in this case PSA SMR) to support his pricing for sales of the Topps packs while also finding the time to single me out for using the same source of data for the sales of my cards. Upon my pointing this out, "jimrad" immediately focussed his argument on pricing rather than the source of the data itself.

I'm not sure where the confusion lies, nor where is there satisfaction to be gained in all this for "jimrad" or "mcolney 1" but I guess everyone needs their niche where they have the support of a clique of some sort. Congratulations to you both if you have that here. I want no part of that as I have better things to do with my time. I thought I would simply post my cards here for sale and if there was anyone interested I would negotiate a price with this person. If said person provided me with data indicating my cards were worth price "B" rather than price "A", I would certainly take that into account when negotiating the price of the lot.

All this being said, if you want to discuss facts, it's highly misleading starting a forum about a 1979 Topps rip while posting a $1400 value for a Gretzky rookie as bait for pack pricing. With a 3.7% chance of pulling a Gretzky on a per pack basis and a 3.2% chance of that card being a PSA 9 or greater (based only on submitted cards, the actual percentage is likely even much lower) your chances of getting a $1400 return on the $65 pack purchase is almost astronomically low, approximately 0.1%. If you're hoping to get a PSA 9 Gretzky, just save your money and pick one up in auction. That being said, I bust vintage wax all the time, not to pull mint cards, simply because I appreciate the nostalgia. Good luck to those who did purchase the Topps packs, I hope you do pull a mint card!
