Nyjer Morgan: What a punk!

I liked Morgan when he first came up. But after the last week he may be my least favorite player in MLB. Too bad he didn't hurt HIS shoulder when he charged the mound. What a classless individual.

<< <i>Those two steals down 14-3 really helped your team! >>
It was just the 4th inning, and he scored on a sac fly after those steals. The Nats put 10 runs on the board total before going down 16-10.
A couple of 10 run leds go erased in the past few weeks, so why should a loosing team stop competing just because they've got a big deficit?

I don't have a problem with the steals. You have to do that to stay in the game. I do have a problem with the way he's gone after the catchers in the past couple of series and the way he charged the mound and mocked the fans.

Do you think for one minute that he had his TEAM's best interest in mind when he stole those bases? No way, not a chance. He had his own stats and personal vendetta in mind.
At that point it was him Vs. the pitcher that hit him, he could have cared less about the score.
History of acting like a child
He reminds me of Milton Bradley.

<< <i>Morgan HAD to charge the mound at that point. He'd already been hit once - and took it without incident. Stealing the two bases, well, it was still early and they weren't holding him on. But when they threw at him a second time? Yeah, he HAD to go after the pitcher (who, btw, should have been tossed after drilling Morgan the first time). Morgan's done plenty of stuff wrong in the last few days but he did nothing wrong against the Marlins - either in this particular game or in the collision with the catcher.
Tabe >>
Hadn't the pitcher hit a couple other batters before Morgan? I'm not saying it was but it could have been that he just didn't have great control last night.
No one HAS to charge the mound. Getting hit by a pitch is part of the game, intentional or not. Be a man about it, take your base, and quit acting like a spoiled brat. And you don't think taunting the fans was wrong? Screw Nyjer Morgan.

Does it matter what he had in mind when he did something that helped his team?
Would it have been better if he did NOT steal, and just took a modest lead and waited for a hitter to move him over?
Perhaps the Nationals, as a team, should just forfeit the rest of the season, since they have no chance to go to the playoffs. All they're doing is padding stats.
I'm not praising Morgan, he's an a-hole. But, I don't like the concept of "if you're loosing big, stop competing."

He did that. The FIRST time. Exactly how often is he supposed to let the Marlins throw at him? He got beaned, took his base, and didn't fight about it. They threw at him a SECOND time.
<< <i> And you don't think taunting the fans was wrong? Screw Nyjer Morgan. >>
That's not what I said. I said Morgan did nothing wrong "against the Marlins". His taunting of the fans was bush-league, to say the least.
So Morgan got an additional 8 games for all of his recent nonsense. Sanchez only got 3 games, Volstad 6, both of which are far too light in my opinion. Sanchez should have gotten at least 5, while Volstad should have gotten at least 15. 15 is a lot but he's a starter and 6 games is essentially a one game suspension for him (he'll only miss one start).

First, from what I saw of his collison at home plate with the Marlins catcher. I don't have a big issue with it. He is getting to the plate the same time as the ball. In that scenario, as a player, your job is to score. If that means you have to bowl the catcher over, so be it. Get the ball out of his hands.
Second, concerning his stealing 2nd and third. No lead, no ever how big it is is safe. How many times during football have you seen a team get up big, play prevent defense and lose. I hate that. I have seen plenty of teams come from 10 down to win. Last week, the Reds were up 10-1 on SF only to see SF tie it and the Reds had to pull the game out in extra innings. I have no issues with a team being aggresive and putting the game out of reach.
Third, concerning him charging the mound. The pitcher had already hit at least three batters. Morgan had been hit the last time he was up and stole 2 bases. Next time up the first pitch throws behind him. Honestly, everyone and their brother knows he was sending a message to him. I have no issues with Morgan charging the mound. Now, Morgan looked like a punk after the fight was over. Buddy, you got your butt kicked (thanks to the first baseman). You have no business trying to show the crowd how tough you are after getting a Stone Cold Stunner put on you.
Now to my point, if this had been Jeter, Pujols, Utley, Rolen, Vlad, Fielder, Howard, Chipper or countless other Popular Players, would any of us be tearing them apart like we are Morgan? Are we holding Morgan to a different standard because we view him as a punk? My opinion is we are. If it was of the other guys, MLB would not have been as harsh and we would have been demanding the Marlins pitcher and 1B to have been given stiffer punishments. This is how I see it.

Morgan and Ventura both looked like fools and IMO, got what they deserved. I don't have a problem at all with what Morgan did to that catcher, but when you run to the mound with that punch that Mr. Magoo could have seen coming, you deserve to get your clock cleaned.

Well stated, IMO. It's obvious, at least in my eyes, that part of the backlash against Morgan is due to his persona and his appearance.

<< <i>I don't think Morgan did anything wrong at all. So he dislocated the shoulder of a catcher. To me, that looked like a clean hit. Hey, Pete Rose is still notorious for running over a catcher during an All Star game and basically ruining Ray Fosse's career. If they were 10 runs ahead, I would say he shouldn't steal, but 10 runs behind, you gotta do it. >>
<< <i>Pete Rose does this in an exhibition and he's "playing hard". Morgan does this in a regular season game and it's "bush league" ... look at the double standard.

I agree.
The critical fact is that the catcher was blocking the plate.
Once he does that, he's fair game for the runner to do anything he can to score and move the catcher off the plate.
I'm amazed at the posters who don't see this fact.

AS for the people insinuating that I (or anyone else here) that feels this way is because of his "appearance" (I assume you mean race?) that's a BS comment. I couldn't care any less what he looks like. All I care about is how a player handles himself on and off the field. I would feel the same way if it was Adam Wainwright acting like a total d-bad. So don't give me this "I'm getting the feeling that some of y'all want to use other words besides "punk" to describe Morgan but don't want to come off looking prejudiced" crap and insinuate that I want to call him a racist term. I DO want to call him something worse than punk but it's not racist, just some choice 4 letter words that happen to be blocked by CU.

Read the comments on You Tube and tell me that a large part of the backlash against Morgan isn't racially based. If you don't think so, you're either clueless or lying. Maybe you are one of the few who are strictly criticizing him based solely on his behavior as you claim, but if so, you are certainly in the minority (no pun intended) on that count.

I haven't once viewed the incidents on YouTube and I don't plan on it so I have not read those comments, nor do I care. From what I have seen of most of the posters (though not all; I do have some very close friends that are regular YouTube posters) haven't been out of diapers long enough to know what racism is so to judge widespread public opinion based on those comments is rather dumb.
Contrary to what Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have you believe not everything that is said is racially motivated.

So what you're saying is that you can't be a racist if you haven't been out of diapers long enough? Talk about a dumb comment,
And who said anything about Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton? I asked you to read the comments posted on You Tube to determine for yourself if a large part of the backlash against a guy like Morgan isn't racially motivated. In response, you basically said you'd rather remain ignorant of that aspect (not surprising since it contradicts your assertions), even though you can get a much more accurate indication of public opinion by reading comments that are made essentially under the cloak of anonymity, unlike a more public forum like this one.

Okay. I read comments for 4 or 5 videos. And you're right, there are some racially motivated comments (maybe 15%-20%). But most of the comments were based on the play and attitude of Morgan, either for or against, with ZERO comment toward race.

If it's the pitcher handling his business, a la Nolan Ryan, I agree with you. If it's the first baseman running in with a sucker punch/clothesline, you're dead wrong.
