US $5 Liberty gold coin

Is this coin, in circulated condition, valued basically for its gold content? If so, what percentage of spot should one expect to get for a US $5 Liberty gold coin that is .2419 oz AGW. TIA.

AGW X's melt at the very least. If I could not get that I'd find another buyer.

I am not an expert in pre-1933 gold, but if I am not mistaken, other forum members said that a 10% over spot for a circulated/XF would be a good buy.
On eBay they go well over it.
I am planning to buy one myself, but would like to see it before buying it.

Don't know why but the Indian Head goes for more $$. Can anyone explain it?

It's a much more attractive design, and they were minted for a shorter period of time. Many of them were also likely melted in the '33 roundup.

  • They sell for 305-355 depending on the buyer and location. I picked up 2 last week, and 3 indian heads for $330 each.
    Hope this helps

on ebay the non-key date raw $5 Liberties go for roughly $340 in VF and then add about $20 for XF and another $20 for AU. Low MS can go for anywhere between $375 and $500. These are averages of course, and ya I notice the Indians going for more also. With all the Liberties I have I have yet to get a $5 Indian, but I usually sort the auctions by price and once the auction reaches about $375 for Liberties and $400 Indians I usually shy away.
