Hobby update?

Hello Everyone,

It's been a long time since I've been on here. I haven't been doing much in the way of collecting cards as some sweet travels, and a wonderful girl in my life has taken the extra spending out of the picture. Anything new and exciting with the hobby within the last couple years? Looking at ebay it's looking like prices are falling. Thoughts on this?

All the best everyone, and welcome all new members!

Jeff

Prices are falling on auctions, but people keep running stuff out there.
It is a depression out there and people aren't spending like they were 5 yrs ago.
There are great deals to be made, auctions are always tough because you need the right person
who is looking for that certain card to happen by your listing at that particular time.
If those stars don't align.. that's when you see prices fall. I find it foolish to run auctions anymore
but I love buying em if people will continue to give their stuff away.

You should be able to find some great deals on Strasburg cards!
  • From one Alaskan to another - hey, how's it going Jeff?!

Yes, the recession has resulted in some affordable price points in places. It has potentially made it a better time to buy vintage sports cards, same as has happened in a lot of industries over the last few years.

You had some nice looking cards that you showed me a few months back at the Anchorage Sportscard Show. Beautiful '33 Ruth too!

    Good wishes!

  • Hi Jeff,

Welcome back! Like most industries and hobbies, the market has definitely taken a little hit, but if you have a few spare bucks it is a good time to buy. I see you like the 1950 Callahan cards. They got hot for a period of time, but have fallen like a rock lately. I was number 4 on the PSA registry and I felt the market shifting hard so I dumped about 26 PSA 9's and flipped them into the 1935 Chicle set. I think if you are going to get back into them, they will become a great deal shortly.

Once again, welcome back, and congrats on finding a nice lady!

    Hi Jeff

Welcome back - I do remember the name.

This is trite - but the more things change - the more they stay the same.

Prices down - yes - will they go back up? Who knows.

We all have to reevaluate how we shop. I spend way more time with collectibles and always have. Both cards and collectibles have been affected.

I'm just careful how much I spend - and once I decide on something - I live with whatever happens since there's very little I can do.

Good luck if you decide to jump back in?

Weinhold, great to hear from you! Bizarre summer we're having, hugh? Not excited seeing the trees changing already. I don't know if I am going to go full force back into the hobby. As far as the Callahan's go, my dad has a complete set in an 8 grade, so that is good there. And my RC HOF'ers is good, I could always use more! I think the girl and I are going to head to South America this x-mas with her family, so lots happening!

    Thanks everyone!
