CoinFest Directions From Manhattan

CoinosaurusCoinosaurus Posts: 9,645 ✭✭✭✭✭
If one were taking public transport from Manhattan how would one go? Theoretically speaking of course.

I am expecting Longacre's personal car and driver at my swank NYC hotel, this is just the backup plan.

If one of Longacre's fleet of cars is somehow unavailable, you would probably take a MetroNorth train from Grand Central to Stamford, CT.

According to Google Maps, the site of Coin Fest appears to be less than a half mile from the Stamford Metro North train station. I don't know the area, so I can't advise about walking, but there should be taxis available.

Two of my co-workers commute through Stamford and I can ask them for their opinions about walking to the hotel on Monday.

    Here you go!

You take the Metro North train and will get there in 45 minutes.
The hotel is pretty close to the station. (This year a little further, since the switched to the Marriott.)

This year hotel does offer a shuttle from the train station.... you just have to call the hotel for a pick up.....however like everything else in the world there is no guarantee .....but its worth a try....LOL.... cabs are usually available at the train station as well

From Manhattan go to Grand Central Terminal and board an MTA Metro-North Railroad line train that stops at the Stamford, CT station. The Stamford station is a major stop on the line so most trains should stop at that station. Disembark at Stamford and proceed north on State Highway 104. Turn left on Tresser Blvd. The Marriott is on Tresser Blvd. about 1/3 mile from the station. I believe the Marriott runs a courtesy shuttle to and from the station.

Amtrak from Penn Station also serves Stamford. Amtrak trains are more comfortable but fares are more expensive.

Airport is about 15 miles to the west. It is deceptively more difficult than it looks to get from the airport to downtown Stamford especially at night.

Agreed, it's not that far, it's just that there's not one easy route. The two main thoroughfares which run parallel through that part of the state are I-95 and the Merritt Parkway. The show hotel is just north (sorry, was thinking of last year's venue) of I-95, which runs along the shoreline, while the airport is north of the Merritt. There's no simple, direct way to get from one to the other through downtown Stamford.

Your best bet might be to ask your hotel if they offer a shuttle, or to use a livery service or cab. Depending on where you are staying in town, you won't have much use for a car during the show.

In the event my driver and Maybach is not available to pick you up, please take Metro North (New Haven Line) from Grand Central Terminal to Stamford. Typically all of the New Haven Line trains stop at Stamford, but just check the board at the platform to make sure.

The Marriott hotel is within walking distance, but the street that the train station is on is quite busy. You need to walk around the block to get to the Marriott (it is a little hard to explain, but you will see when you get there). Otherwise, I hear there is a shuttle provided by the coin show.

Hopefully this link works, otherwise, google Metro North Railroad: MNRR

Actually the Westchester County Airport... i.e. White Plains.... is one of the best airports in the country and coin friendly .... the operations manager is a longtime member of the WCCC.... its not hard at all to go from the airport to the show.... there are 4 rental car agency's at the airport, there are limo/taxi services, etc.... in terms of flying in and out.... it is one of the most pleasurable airports in the country since it does not have the long lines like a JFK or LGA

No it's not. The terminal is extremely small with limited facilities and only a few of the eight boarding gates have jetbridges. The majority of the airfield traffic is comprised of private and corporate jets, all of which have priority over commercial operations. The departure and arrival procedures require unusually large entrail spacing resulting in inefficiencies and unnecessary delays and weather minimums inferior to those of the major nearby airports can result in diversions when weather becomes an issue. In most circumstances, Westchester Co. Airport (HPN) is best avoided.

With the exception of Jetblue all commercial flights from HPN are by regional affiliate operations and not mainline. The result is smaller airplanes with limited carry-on space on board. That restricts the quantity of coins you will be able to carry on board with you.

Because HPN is a smaller, quieter airport, not all ground transportation amenities stay open late hours. If your flight is delayed and you arrive at a late hour you will find rental car counters closed for the night and taxis scarce or generally unavailable, especially if you're not one of the first people off the plane. Like it or not, unless you have access to Longacre's private line and he's willing to feel charitable, the deserted airport could possibly turn into your place of lodging for that night.

The first time I attended Coinfest was also the first time I flew into HPN. Because of precipitation and low ceilings (captain stated ATIS reported ceilings at 900ft - 900ft isn't low by any means. At SFO 900ft ceilings is the norm about 300 days a year) my flight was nearly diverted to BDL. A few days later my outbound flight was delayed over one hour to allow about seven NetJet and other private jets to depart ahead of us. Even with a single runway operation it doesn't take one hour to release seven airplanes. Those experiences have me avoiding HPN at all costs.

In my opinion the best airport to fly into for Coinfest is Newark Liberty Intl. That airport has a direct rail link to Stamford which allows you to ride a train directly from the airport to Stamford without the need to change trains. Although I'm flying in and out of LaGuardia this time I've used EWR the last two years and it has worked out wonders.

You can't beat Westchester Airport for a quick hop to Chicago. For any other flights, LaGuardia or JFK are required. Longacre despises the George Washington Bridge and I never have my driver take me to Newark Airport.

  • Larry, it is a decent retail coin show, but it is a terrible wholesale show.
If you can deal with the hour and a half (with no traffic) trip to Stamford from JFK it is worth going...
But it does fall far short of the major or regional shows due to the bourse being divided into several rooms and the difficulty of getting there...
  • ScarsdaleCoinScarsdaleCoin Posts: 5,359 ✭✭✭✭✭
We moved hotels, so your comments dont apply about the rooms...... also we are NOT a wholesale show....we are a top notch regional show geared to collectors.... dealers who are here sell to people who care about what they are buying..... most of the dealers have had very good results...with several national dealers reporting that they did more business at Coinfest than Baltimore... simple reason ....folks who have jobs and cant spend time to travel will come to Coinfest...it is without a doubt the best show in the NY, NJ, CT region
and WTCG I know you dont like Westchester airport...but it IMHO is great...I fly out and in there all the time
