Went to get me a green tea this morning before I headed to class and got silvered in my change. Was a 43-S war nick. Always nice to get some silver. Why do these turn so dark? Is it due to the nickel content?

I don't think a war nickel has that much nickel content, actually. The color is probably due to to the other stuff (besides the silver) in the alloy... tin/zinc/manganese?

Been a while since I plucked a warnick from circulation. It still happens, though. Nice to know there's still a tiny bit o' silver circulating out there, eh?

Yeah, but I still appear occasionally. What little time I do spend here is usually over on the Darkside, these days. Are you still detecting? I haven't been out since ... uh... March or April, I guess. As soon as it cools off I might have to go back to "dig mode".

War nics were 56% copper, 35 % silver and 9% manganese.

I haven't detected in a long time. My house was built in the mid 40's and my wife's family has lived here ever since it was built, so theres bound to be some silver in the ground here. When and if I ever get some free time, I am gonna do some digging.

The manganese causes them to get dark/greenish. Combined with brass in Sac dollars it causes them to tarnish similarly.
