33 goudey or pre-war collectors *ruth and Gehrig*

There is a 1933 Goudey Set listed on Ebay by a legit seller. He has listed the set to be in VG condition, but he usually grades about 1 grade too high. Looking at the pictures, I think that an average grade of Good is more accurate. Either way, the set is currently listed at $20,000. That is too high, but if anybody is looking to pick up any cards, let me know. If somebody is looking to pick up any of the 33 Gehrig's, ruth's, or any of the big name HOF'ers this may be an opportunity.

Is this a spam? Why would we let you know?
  • I don't know if this is considered spam. This isn't my set. I was wondering if there were people out there that wanted a few cards from this set. I don't have any need for the Gehrigs or a few of the Ruth's. I am just asking if there are any 33 collectors that are looking go in on this with me.

$20,000 is very pricey.......you would do better buying one at REA...I bet you can get it cheaper!
  • I totally agree, but I have no idea where the seller is willing to go. I would think if I could find a few interested buyers. We could put in an offer at $12,000-$15,000. That may be good enough.

Wow there sure are a lot of "Rookies" in that R319 set image

Is the seller clueless or just hyping??? ..............either way it makes him look like a guy who collects 1971 Topps cards.

  • He is an e-bay lister who clearly doesn't specialize in pre-war. He over-hypes and over-states condition.

I e-mailed him and he told me that $12,000 was too low, but if I wanted to make a formal offer, we could go from there.

I'm not going to pursue this unless somebody other than me has some interest. A good start would be know if there was anybody here interested in picking up one of the gehrigs or any of the Ruth's.

given the condition of the key cards, I'd think $9k-10k would be about it. You'd be better walking from it.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

    I agree.
  • Looking like you guys are right. You usually are. This guy may have gotten in too deep. He wants $15K and he told me he has more than 12K in it. I still think the set is probably worth closer to 10K-12K simply because 2 Ruth's look to be in VG or VG EX condition and that's about $4,000 right there. This is another guy who probably knows post war stuff quite well going out of his comfort zone and making a bad decision.
