Seems quite obvious that the 1st and 2nd underbidders knew what it is. I would speculate that the winning bidder may have been taking a shot in the dark. Or the winner just had more patience, and remained in the shadows until the end.
A PCGS VF35 recently sold on Heritage for just over $2800. However, it is impossible to tell whether the coin in the Ebay auction will grade or not from the photos provided. Even in a gennie holder it would still be worth a nice premium I would think.
It was on my radar as well as a few others (obviously, from the hammer price). Rare as that variety is, it does occasionally show up on eBay unattributed. The seller is lucky he had good pictures, last year I cherrypicked one on eBay which I'm told eventually wound up in a PCGS VF35 holder (I don't think it's the same as the Heritage coin), except that seller had terrible photos. My cost for that coin was a few cents over $20. The UNC coin in Gerry Fortin's reference set was also an eBay cherrypick.

I'm looking at the "OF" in the obverse legend, and think that could be just a photograph problem.?
That variety is visible with the naked eye.
People bidding knew what it was.
It is worth every bit of that price weather it grades or not.
The rim ding is not a problem, but may have been cleaned.
Either way it is a neat coin.
