If I were to purchase an 18k class ring would it wear down pretty quick? Am I better off with 14k? Thanks

  • I see a lot of class rings in the scrap I buy, some only a year old ! If you have to have one I would go for the lowest karat you can get, just MHO.

My wedding band is 18k, my baht necklace is 24k. Neither shows more than light wear. Of course they're not as detailed as a class ring. But the hype about high karat jewelry wearing down is just that: hype.

That said: be prepared to pay multiples of melt for a class ring. Many multiples. A ring that has $100 worth of gold may cost as much as $1000 or more.

Rings made of higher than 14k tend to bend easier.

Very good points by all. I do realize that there is a huge markup on jewelry, but I will have waited 23 years from the time I graduated high school to finish college so I want to commemorate it in style. image I think I've been talked down to 14k instead of 18k though. Thanks folks. image
