Bechtler gold coin

Hi! I have a $1 Betchtler gold coin. It is part of a larger collection that my sister and I inherited. The collection has set in a safety deposit box since 1993. Before making any decisions on this coin I would love to have some input. The coin in question is a 1842-1850 A. Bechtler $1 Carolina Gold Coin with a hole in it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

My best advice is to send it off to PCGS for authentication.

Any Bechtler coin is cool. Here's some historical info about the Bechtler coins Link
  • I guess that is probably a "Doh"moment! Regretfully. But say I took it to Dallas Gold and Silver to have it graded/authenticated. Do I want to try to sell it to them? Or... do I want to come back to a site such as this to sell? I have many coins and paper money that I have pictures and have cataloged. I have enjoyed the work and research enormously! Do I have to authenticate all the coins and paper? If we chose to sell should we do it as a lot? I guess I didn't exactly ask the right question...

    Thanks!

Certainly, while any Bechtler gold coin is a fascinating piece of history, I'm sure you realize that the hole diminishes the price of the coin substantially.

Should you want to sell it, you should get it authenticated (either by a service such as PCGS or NGC or by a dealer familiar with Southern gold) and attempt to put a price on it (you might check the Heritage auction archives or get offers/estimates from a few dealers).

If you'd like a suggestion or two regarding dealers you should approach, just send me a PM (click on the lock in the top right corner of my reply) - also, go into your profile and enable your ability to send and receive Private Messages.

I wouldn't spend the money on slabbing a coin that's obviously real but an ex-jewelry coin.

  • I think the history of the coin is awesome! We have always none that we had the coin as well as the other coins and paper money, but have been reluctant to let them go just for that reason. In reality I don't think my sister and I will ever be coin collectors or dealers... Although, I have had fun researching! It's been fun! image

If all else fails, it is ready to be used as a unique necklace.

  • That's a good idea! I have even thought of wearing it myself! I have always been curious about its direct history. We come from a family with a lot of interesting history.

  • To bad it has a hole! I have seen the value on some of these coins! The coin itself is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum! And that's a pretty cool coin to start with.

Did your inheritance include any other special coins? If you're not uncomfortable saying so I'm sure a lot of us would like to hear about others.

Good luck with the Bechtler. I don't have much advice other than to say "don't accept the first offer you get for it".

  • I will definately share them with you guys! Thank you!

PCGS will not slab or authenticate a holed coin, as I understand. ANACS will.

A dandy little piece for sure, something you do not see every day!
