Fun with Ikes!

I've tried finding Ike varieties once before, in a small lot of clads, without success. Then last week I got a lot of 60 clads. Besides a Type 2 1972-P clad, I also found 8 clads with "talon heads", "jaw-lines", and "moon-lines". A neat thing about those is that 1 of them was found in the old small lot that I had searched last year, before I knew about these die clashes. They're easy to spot and a lot of fun to find.

I got all my information from The Die Clash Grading System PDF., and the US Coin Forum here. Many thanks to Rob ModernDollarNut Ezerman, The Ike Group, and Lee Lydston!

Here are fotos of 4 of my finds:

This Talon Head stands out, so I call it grade "A" by the Ike Group's standards. It's a 1971-D:

Both of 71-D's I found have fairly strong Talon Head clashes. In general, but definitely not exclusively, it seems that Ike die-clashes are more likely to be found on pieces struck at the Denver Mint. For those who are new to Ike die-clashes, the talon head's origin is the deep recess between the eagle's legs on the reverse. There's a great set of overlays in the article that makes these clashes super-easy to see.

The next foto is the other 71-D. There's no black arrow in the picture to point to it, but you should be able to spot the Talon Head easily. This one took a little tilt to see it fully, so I gave it a Grade B in the Ike Group scale. On the reverse, both the lines coming off the lower part of Earth, and the line above the O in DOLLAR, seem smoothed out, so I call them Grade C. The lines off the Earth are the Jaw-lines of Ike, and the line above the O and extending thru DOLLAR faintly is from the crown of Ike's head:

Here's a better view of the clash from Ike's crown, on a 1972-D. It's maybe a Grade B clash. Since it usually goes thru the largest crater, it's called the moon-line. This is a double moon-line:

On the obverse of that same 72-D is a "tight, double talon head". Fairly weak, it's only a Grade C clash:

Finally, this is a close-up of the Earth on the 1972-P, Type 2 that I found. I only had four 72-P's to look through, so I was thrilled that the elusive Type 2 was one of them!

There is a lot of good info in past threads, and at IkeGroup.Org, about identifying the Type 2. But Lee Lydston's fantastic graphic puts the principal diagnostic into one composite picture:

The Types 1, 2, and 3 can each be found in the 1972-P clad issue. To have your own diagnostic in hand, look at your own 40% silver business strikes which come from the Blue Ike envelopes. The 1971-S unc Silver has the Type 1 Earth, the 1972-S unc Silver has the Type 2 Earth, and the 1973-S unc Silver has the Type 3 Earth. That's easy to remember!

The Type 6 is of course the Friendly Eagle Variety, FEV RDV-006. Look for it on the 1971-D clad.

By the way, the Type 7 reverse is known on only two prototype silver proofs of 1971-S, which each have a unique obverse. One is the Lydston Ike, and the other is the Chatham Ike.

Happy hunting!

How about a double "Moon Line"?

This is a 1971-D and I have no idea where its at! image

BTW, nice finds on the Talons. Check out your 1971-S and 1972-S Silver Business Strikes as the Talon Heads are a little more difficult to find on them.

    Here's a 71-S:

    Here's a 78-D!

I use them on the rifle range - perfect target at 100 meters.

<< <i>I use them on the rifle range - perfect target at 100 meters. >>

A talented marksman would hit a Peace Dollar at 100 meters by just grazing it at the 1 through 12 o'clock positions and then post it to the forums.
