There's also been the tide of the past 2-3 decades where everyone wanted to be a banker or lawyer. Hence we've seen the percentage of trained engineers, scientists, mathematicians, etc. slowly decrease while the country's physical infrastructure has deteriorated. But we're "better" at moving money around and suing people than ever before. Being the world's investment banker certainly has had its perks.
